HIGHLANDERS TOPPLE KNIGHTS FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, VA.  – Radford Women's Soccer scored three goals in the first 11 minutes and knocked off Southern Virginia, 7-0, for its first win of 2014 on Friday evening at Cupp Memorial Stadium. Senior Kara Wade recorded a pair of goals, while senior Jasmine Sampson added a goal and two assists and sophomore Hannah Duff registered a pair of assists.

Playing their first game at Cupp Stadium this season, the Highlanders (1-3-1) extended their winning and undefeated streaks at Cupp to 12 and 20 (18-0-2) matches, respectively.

"It was a good team win tonight," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "It was good to get a lot of numbers in the game and score some nice goals."

Wade notched the first and third goals of the game to bring her team-best total to three. She opened the scoring with a quick strike just 62 seconds into the match. A low service across the box from Duff, found a wide-open Wade, who comfortably roofed into the top of the net.

Following Asyia Mitchell's first goal of the season, a 20-yard bender to the far post that was assisted by Duff, Wade capped off her night with a 25-yard blast into the top part of the net to complete her second collegiate multi-goal game.

Sampson, who set up Wade's second score, found the back of the net on her own in the 35th minute to close out the first half scoring. Freshman McKensey Ziegler assisted Sampson on the goal for her second helper of the season.

In the second half, sophomore Britney Kendall (55') netted her first goal of the season on a nice individual effort. Freshmen Nicole Petocchi (79') and Kayla Blake (89') closed out the evening's scoring as they found paydirt for their first collegiate goals. Red-shirt freshman Sarah Rainey earned her first career assist and point on Petocchi's goal, while Sampson added her second assist on Blake's one-time finish in the box.

The Highlanders outshot the Knights, 27-2 and recorded all eight corner kicks.

A trio of goalkeepers received credit for Radford's first clean sheet of the season. Making the start, freshman Katie McCormick notched the lone save in the first half. Freshman Maddie Malueg, in her first collegiate appearance, and sophomore Sydney Chervenic saw action in the final 45 minutes.

Radford continues its two-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 14 when it hosts Old Dominion at 1:00 p.m.
