RU DOMINATES INCARNATE WORD IN SHUTOUT WIN

BOX SCORE |

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Radford (2-2-1) defense did not allow a shot on goal Sunday to Incarnate Word (0-5-0), and Stephen Hudgens scored his first career game-winning goal in a dominating 1-0 victory at the final day of the High Point Plaza Classic at Vert Field. Chel Ho Park Kim assisted on the winner, his 15th career assist, which moves him tied for seventh all-time at RU. Aitor Pouseu Blanco recorded his second career shutout in goal.

9274Hudgens scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career when he put back a rebound into the net off Park Kim's initial shot on goal in the 14th minute of play. The Highlanders controlled the game from the onset holding an 8-0 edge in shots on goal and a 15-8 advantage in total shots. The Cardinals were fortunate to keep the final at 1-0 making two team saves on RU attempts.

"We had to battle all the way until the end for this win," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "We were unlucky not to extend the lead with them somehow making a couple saves off the line. I thought we prepared and played fairly well, but still have plenty to improve on."

The Highlanders complete a season-opening five-game stretch against some of the toughest competition of the season with an even 2-2-1 mark and now play in Cupp Stadium for the first time Saturday hosting another tough opponent, Elon. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m., and the game will be carried on the Big South Network.

"We are excited to get to play at Cupp against a very strong and well-coached Elon team," Reeves said. "Opening night with the scarf giveaway is always a great atmosphere, and we hope to make it even bigger this year. We are hopeful for a strong turnout from the RU students and the local community."
