LATE ODU GOAL UPENDS WOMEN'S SOCCER, 1-0

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, VA.  – Despite seven saves from freshman keeper Katie McCormick, Old Dominion's Jessie Klamut broke a scoreless deadlock in the 85th minute as the Monarchs edged the Highlanders, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The Highlanders and Monarchs had several good scoring chances in the second half before Klamut beat her defender to the ball and tucked home a rebound after McCormick made a good save on Madison Hogan's point blank 10-yard shot from the left.

Radford came out strong in the second half and was pressuring the ODU defense for the first 18 minutes with its best chances coming in between the 54th and 55th minute. Jordan Lundin's low hard free kick from 25 yards was pushed away by a diving Samantha Frowen.  McKenzey Ziegler had two chances on the rebound, but her shots were blocked and then saved, respectively. Less than minute later, Britney Kendall found a wide-open Hannah Thomas inside the six, but Thomas' volley went right into Frowen's gloves.

From that point ODU turned up the pressure on the RU defense and nearly scored minutes before Klamut's strike when Devin Dougherty skied the ball over the crossbar (83') from inside the six-yard box.

McCormick had another strong game in between the pipes for the Highlanders, including a 1v1 kick save on Klamut in the 28th minute.

Frowen, who started the second half for the Monarchs, made four saves. Her counterpart, Erin Kinz, stopped three shots in the first half. ODU held a slight advantage in shots, 15-14, while RU owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Ziegler and Annabel Bergin each charted three shots for the Highlanders, while Klamut notched a game-high six for the Monarchs.

The defeat ended Radford 12-game winning and 20-game undefeated streaks at Cupp Stadium. It marked the first loss on their home pitch since High Point defeated them, 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 20, 2011.

Radford closes out its non-conference portion of its schedule next weekend, starting with a trip on Friday, Sept. 19 to former Big South foe VMI. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
