HIGHLANDERS ESCAPE PC WITH 1-0 DOUBLE OT WIN IN LEAGUE OPENER

CLINTON, S.C. – Freshman Jordan Lundin converted a penalty kick in double overtime and Radford escaped with 1-0 road victory at Presbyterian in the Big South opener for both squads on a cool evening at Martin Stadium. It was the Highlanders (4-4-1, 1-0-0 Big South) third straight win and sixth consecutive against the Blue Hose (3-4-0, 0-1-0).

The Highlanders were awarded a penalty kick in the 103rd minute when a service into the box by Asyia Mitchell, bounced up and hit a Blue Hose defender's arm on a mishit clearance. Lundin slotted the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate game-winner and third of the season.

"Presbyterian is always well coached and prepared," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "They always make it tough on us. We are happy with the three points and a road win in our Big South opener."

Freshman Katie McCormick registered four saves to earn her second shutout of the season. She contributed to Radford's fourth straight clean sheet against Presbyterian and to a defense that has not allowed a Blue Hose goal in the last 465:53. It also marked the 19th clean sheet in Big South regular season play since the start of 2011.

Senior Kara Wade paced the Highlanders with a game-best five shots as RU outshot PC, 20-12 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Highlanders had the better chances in the first half, but went into the break scoreless. RU out shot the Blue Hose, 8-2 and earned all six corner kicks. Wade led all players with three shots and had the best scoring chance. However, the senior's left-footed shot from inside the box was saved by a diving Sydney Fontenot.

Following an early second-half header by Annabel Bergin whizzed just wide of the post and a Lundin scoring chance stopped by Fontenot, PC started to take control of the match. The Blue Hose countered with back-to-back odd-man rushes and several dangerous balls in the 18 during a15-minute span, but the Highlander defense withstood the surge.

Radford, had a few more chances, including Asyia Mitchell's attempt in 77th minute, but Fontenont came up big with another diving save. She finished with seven saves for the Blue Hose.

The Highlanders return home on Saturday, Sept. 24 to host Charleston Southern at 2:00 p.m.

Note: RU improves to 18-1-4 in Big South regular season play since the start of 2012 and 32-5-5 since 2010.
