GOLDEN GOAL AGAIN! RADFORD TOPS CSU IN DOUBLE OT FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

RADFORD Va. – Radford went to double overtime for the second straight match and came out on top again when Kara Wade notched the game-winner in the 103rd minute, sending the Highlanders (5-4-1, 2-0-0) to a 3-2 win over Charleston Southern and their fourth straight win in Big South action from Cupp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After seeing several great opportunities denied and go awry, Wade gathered a short slip from Asyia Mitchell, made one move, composed herself and cracked home the game-winner from 10 yards out. It was the senior's team-leading fifth goal and third game-winner this season. Mitchell finished with two assists, setting up RU's second goal of the match.

It was the first back-to-back double overtime wins in program history and the first consecutive OT victories since 1999 when Radford won three straight.

The Buccaneers (4-6-0, 0-2-0) sent the match into overtime when Emma Faubert redirected Chelsea Phillips well-wide shot with just under eight minutes to play. The equalizer by Faubert, who also set up CSU's first goal, came 8:35 after RU had taken the lead.

"I was proud of our resilience to come back and then get it done in overtime," head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I thought we had some great possession today and scored some impressive goals. We have to improve defensively on set pieces, but overall a good performance."

In a match that saw numerous scoring opportunities, the Highlanders totaled 33 shots, 13 of which were stopped by a pair of Buccaneer goalkeepers, including 10 by starter Liz-Amanda Brown. CSU charted 15 shots, nine coming in the second half. It was the most shots RU tallied since 36 against VMI in 2012. RU keeper Katie McCormick made seven saves.

CSU took a 1-0 lead into halftime courtesy of Erica Gazzani's 19th-minute header. On the Bucs second corner kick of the half, Gazzani, on top of the six, headed home Emma Faubert's service for the first goal of the game.

The Highlanders held an 11-5 edge in shots, which included two great opportunities. Wade's 25-yard laser caromed off the crossbar (12') and then in the 41st minute Jordan Lundin's penalty kick attempt whizzed wide of the goal.

9378In the second half, Radford's pressure finally paid off in the 63rd minute when freshman Tori Donahue, on the far post, headed home Lundin's corner kick to even the game at 1-1. Donahue's first collegiate goal came three minutes after Lundin hit the second Highlander crossbar of the match.

In the 75th minute, senior Jasmine Sampson provided Radford with a 2-1 lead. She connected on 25-yard upper 90 blast that was set up on a nicely by Mitchell right before colliding with a CSU defender.

The teams combined for 20 corner kicks, 14 in the second half, with Radford holding the 12-8 advantage. Wade and Lundin each registered a game-best six shots. Anna Snells led the Bucs with four shots.

Radford continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday hosting Campbell at 7:00 p.m.
