HIGHLANDERS EARN 1-1 DRAW AT HOWARD

BOX SCORE WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Kara Nay scored the contest's first goal and Katie McCormick made a career-high 13 saves as Radford earned a 1-1 draw at Howard on a hot Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

McCormick, a freshman, recorded eight of her saves for the Highlanders (0-2-1) in the first half and finished with the most saves in a contest since Lisa Lubke notched 13 against High Point in semifinals of the 2009 Big South Tournament.

9209After a scoreless first half, Nay opened the scoring in the 56th minute with her first goal of the season and 10th of her career. Redshirt-sophomore Hannah Thomas flicked freshman McKenzey Ziegler's throw-in to the senior forward, who one-timed her finish from inside the six. It was Ziegler's first collegiate helper and Thomas' first as a Highlander and second of her career.

The Bison (0-3-1) evened the contest just 4:08 later. Following a cross, Nia Walcott corralled a ball off a RU defender's chest and connected on a low shot from the top of the 18 for the equalizer. Later in the half, Howard's Whitney White had the best opportunity to notch the game-winner, but her 69th-minute blast from 30 yards clanged off the crossbar and the rebound attempt was saved by McCormick.

For the contest, Radford registered 10 shots and eight corner kicks, seven after halftime, including four in the first overtime session. Wade recorded a team-best four shots and freshman Tori Donahue added three.

Following some early pressure from Radford, Howard was able to control the ball and test the Highlander defense for much of the first half. McCormick held her ground the first 45 minutes, making eight saves, including back-to-back stops on point blank efforts, to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

The Bison generated seven corner kicks and 13 shots, eight on target, in the first stanza, while the Highlanders recorded four shots and one corner. Three of those shots were knocked aside by Howard goalie Kyra Dickinson.

Radford stays on the road as it travels to Towson on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. match against the Tigers.
