UNC ASHEVILLE GETS BY HIGHLANDERS, 2-1

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team was again on the short end of one-goal decision Saturday night, as UNC Asheville scored a second-half goal to come away with a 2-1 win at Cupp Stadium.
The Highlanders (5-9-0, 0-6-0) have now suffered five losses by just a single score this season, including four of their six Big South Conference matches. UNC Asheville, meanwhile, improved to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Redshirt sophomore Sammie Shiflette scored her first career goal for Radford, with Jessica Wollmann notching the assist. The two connected on a nice give-and-go play to tie the game at 1-1 in the 42nd minute. Shiflette passed the ball outside to Wolllmann on the right wing and the freshman sent it back to the middle of the 18-yard box. Shiflette finished with a low shot to the left corner of the net.
The Highlanders maintained the momentum after halftime and controlled much of the possession, but Asheville struck on a set piece to regain the lead in the 75th minute. The Bulldogs drew a free kick out towards midfield and Caroline Houser headed home the ball sent in by Katie Tuorto for her team-leading fifth tally of the season. Asheville's other goal came in the 19th minute after a series of passes off of a short corner.
Following Houser's go-ahead goal, Radford had a couple of opportunities to answer as they drew fouls just outside the Asheville box, but were unable to convert on the free kicks.
"The difference in the game was they scored on two set pieces and we had several set pieces and we didn't convert on them," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "In these tight games, we have to convert on set pieces. I thought we played really hard. I'm not proud of the result, but I'm proud of our work."
The Highlanders had a 14-9 shot advantage – 6-4 on goal - and won the corner kick battle 5-1. Five different RU players each recorded two shots. Katie McCormick played all 90 minutes in goal and had two saves.
Radford remains at home to host Gardner-Webb on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
