HOW IT HAPPENED
- Radford engineered a 7-2 run late in the fourth quarter to tie the game and outscored George Mason, 8-5, in the overtime period to earn a 66-63 season-opening victory Friday night inside the Dedmon Center.
- Senior guard Aisha Foy's two 3-pointers came at critical times in the game. She nailed her first with 35 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Highlanders on top, 58-57. The Virginia Beach, Va., native's second deep ball gave RU the lead for good (64-61) with 1:17 showing on the clock.
- The Highlanders improve to 23-22 all-time in season openers and 2-1 under head coach Mike McGuire.
- Tonight's game marked the eighth time Radford played in a game decided by three points or less since the beginning of last season (7-1 record in those games).
- RU has a 10-4 record in games decided by five points or less under McGuire.
- Radford moves ahead, 13-3, in the George Mason series.
- Janayla White dropped in a career-high 19 points, while converting 11 of her 14 free-throw attempts.
- Jayda Worthy narrowly missed a double-double, contributing 13 points and nine rebounds. She also dished out a team-high five assists.
- Foy was the third Highlander to reach double-figure scoring, chalking up 11 points.
- Six underclassmen donned the Red and White tonight, including four freshmen.
- Jen Falconer (eight points, two 3-pointers), Lydia Rivers (seven points, nine rebounds) and Sydney Nunley (seven points, three rebounds) all delivered solid minutes in their first action inside the Dedmon Center.
- RU did a phenomenal job, defensively, on preseason All-Atlantic 10 Conference honoree Taylor Brown. The Patriots' point guard was 5-of-14 from the floor and finished with 17 points. Brown averaged 21.4 points per game and scored at least 20 points in 20 games last season.
QUOTABLE
- "That was a hard-fought ball game. I want to credit George Mason. They have a good basketball team with some really good players. They were really hard to prepare for. What a great game to be a part of on opening night. This is what it is all about—both teams competing hard and coming up with clutch plays. I cannot be more proud of our resiliency and the effort put out there on the floor tonight by our players." ~ Radford head coach, Mike McGuire
