HOW IT HAPPENED

Charlotte withstood a late Radford surge and netted the game-winner in the 84^th minute to advance past the Highlanders, 2-1, in Thursday's first-round match of the 2015 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C.
Aitor Pouseu Blanco came up with a clutch save in the 13^th minute when he shielded away a header from Kyle Parker.
Charlotte tallied the first goal of the match in the 42^nd minute off a free kick from 40 yards out. Luke Waechter was able to capitalize on the set piece with his header to the right side of goal.
The Highlanders leveled the score in the 60^th minute off a penalty kick by Jamie Summers.
Radford created two solid chances in the 68^th and 70^th minutes, respectively. Sivert Daehlie rose above a crowd of defenders and fired a header off the crossbar. Nearly two minutes later, Summers nearly doubled his scoring when he curled a free kick from the left wing that caromed off the crossbar.
Brandt Bronico netted the game-winner for the 49ers in the 84^th minute off a rebound from 25 yards out.
RU had one final scoring chance as time expired, but Evan Szklennik's dangerous cross was unable to connect with any Highlanders.

Summers' goal was the seventh of the season for the senior. He improved to 6 for 6 from the penalty spot.
Radford ended the year perfect on penalty-kick conversions (8-8).
Radford's 14 wins are the third-most recorded in a single season in program history.
The Highlanders made their third appearance in the NCAA tournament after competing in play-in games in 1999 and 2000.
Charlotte ended with a 12-6 shot advantage.
The 49ers were one of just three teams to score more than one goal against the RU defense this season.
Radford earned a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Charlotte is a tough opponent and a hard place to play, but I thought the second half in particular we played very well and were exceptionally unlucky—hitting the bar three times and could have equalized with the last kick of the game. We are truly thankful to our seniors who have done a great deal to move this program forward and set high standards for us to push to maintain and elevate even higher. We are also very thankful for all our RU fans and alumni who made the trip down. It was really a great atmosphere. UP NEXT

Radford graduates four seniors: Big South Defensive Player of the Year Daniel O'Keefe, Jamie Summers, Krzysztof Nalborski and Sergio Arzubiaga.
However, 25 Highlanders are eligible to return for RU in what could be a promising 2016 campaign where the team will be looking for its third straight Big South regular-season championship.
