HIGHLANDERS PLAY NATIONAL RUNNERS-UP TO SCORELESS DRAW

CHARLESTON, W.Va. ---- Radford continued its spring slate with a scoreless draw against the NCAA Division II national runners-up University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va., on April 11.

"This spring continues to provide a lot of players with no or very little college game experience an opportunity to compete," said head coach Marc Reeves. "University of Charleston is an exceptional program, and this was a strong game in which we had to defend well, show discipline and attempt to find ways to create a few opportunities."

Neither team had many clear chances in the first half. Nicolas Metzokat was called on with one strong shot from a narrow angle by the Golden Eagles.

Charleston's keeper patrolled outside of his box well against the Highlanders, clearing away a few balls that could have resulted in good looks at the goal.

During the second half, the Golden Eagles who were ranked No. 1 in the nation last year after an impressive 22-1-1 record, maintained possession with Radford creating several counters throughout the 45 minutes. The Highlanders' defense kept the game scoreless with the final whistle nearing, clearing a ball played on the goal line from a strong header off a Charleston corner. Radford countered with numbers down to the Golden Eagle half, but could not put the ball on frame.

"I was pleased with our groups attitude going into the game and thought we had several players perform well," Reeves said. "Spring results are completely irrelevant, but a strong mentality to deal with certain situations and going through tougher experiences can be very useful to players when the games do matter in the fall."
