SOFTBALL PICKS UP BIG SOUTH PLAY AT GARDNER-WEBB

RADFORD, Va. ---- After squaring off with a pair of ACC opponents in N.C. State and Virginia Tech this week, Radford returns to Big South Conference play at Gardner-Webb. First pitch from Crest High School in Shelby, N.C., is slated for Friday at 7 p.m.
 
The Highlanders and Runnin' Bulldogs will conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
 
Mackenzie Blackwell and Maggie Rowe notched hits at Virginia Tech on April 22, highlighted by Rowe's fifth double of the season. She has 10 extra base hits this season.
 
Brown was given her 11th start of the season against the Hokies, throwing 4.2 innings before being pulled in favor of Kelsey Weddle. Brown gave up five runs on seven hits in the 25 batters she faced. Weddle faced four batters, surrendering three runs on two hits.
 
Earlier in the week against N.C. State, Nia Chiles went 1-2 on the day with her lone hit a double in game two against the Wolfpack. Becky Mantel broke up N.C. State's no hitter in the fourth inning with a single hit up the middle. Blackwell finished the doubleheader 1-4.
 
Weddle started game one for Radford, throwing three innings and surrendering six runs on five hits. Taylor Asimakopoulos came in as relief in the fourth inning, holding N.C. State scoreless in the side. Asimakopoulos gave up five runs on five hits in the game.
 
Brown was given the ball in game two versus the Wolfpack, facing nine batters before being pulled in favor of Asimakopoulos. Brown would later return in the fourth inning to close out the game. She threw a total of 2.1 innings, giving up seven earned runs on six hits. Asimakopoulos saw four runs score before Weddle entered the contest for 2.2 innings of work.

10272               Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs                                                    
Garnder-Webb enters the weekend 12-30 and currently on a three game losing streak. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 4-9 while playing at home this season. Last time out, GWU fell to Winthrop, 8-1, in Rock Hill, S.C. The Runnin' Bulldogs have not played a home game since April 4 when they lost to Coastal Carolina 13-3.
 
Kellie Beres paces GWU with a .407 average from the dish. Beres has a team-high 57 hits with a pair of doubles and triples. The power of the Runnin' Bulldogs' lineup comes from Scarlett Harris. Harris has 10 doubles, a triple and eight home runs this season. Summer Darnell has the most appearances and starts in the circle for GWU. Darnell has thrown 126.2 innings with 43 strikeouts. 
 
10274            Radford vs. Gardner-Webb: The Series                                            
Radford and Gardner-Webb have a relatively short history as conference foes. The Highlanders lead the series 15-6 all time, with the first meeting coming back on April 3, 1992. The two programs did not meet again until March 29, 2009, which started a nine-game win streak for Radford. Last season, the Highlanders took two of three against the Runnin' Bulldogs in Radford, Va. In 2013, Radford dropped the series on the road to GWU, two games to one. The Highlanders are 3-6 on the road against Runnin' Bulldogs.
