SPRING SCHEDULE CONTINUES WITH 1-1 DRAW AGAINST MAROONS

RADFORD, Va. ---- Radford played Roanoke to a 1-1 draw on a gorgeous spring night at Cupp stadium on Thursday. Jo Vetle Rimstad knotted the game in the 61st minute, beating the Maroons' keeper on a penalty kick.

"Coach Plugrad has done an excellent job at Roanoke and I was impressed with several guys on his team and their overall desire to compete in the game was great," said head coach Marc Reeves. "We use the spring to see who potentially can consistently show they have the ability to step up and impact our program. We had a range of performances from our two center backs, from playing very well to a collection of guys who lacked in vital aspects that when games matter you have to get it right."

Radford generated its first scoring chance in the fifth minute off a free kick taken by Fraser Colmer. Colmer played a ball from just outside the box on the right side of the pitch to the far post, just missing the head of the diving Rimstad.

The game continued with the Highlanders dominating possession and trying to find a way through. However, they found themselves behind in the game when Roanoke struck in the 32nd minute on a goal from Frederick McNair. Orestis Llias played a ball into the box that found the foot of McNair who finished from 12 yards out, beating Nicolas Mertzokat far post.

Radford knotted the game in the 61st minute on a penalty kick finished by Rimstad. Bismark Amofah made a strong run into the box on the ride side of the pitch, drawing the foul by the Maroon defense. The Highlanders pushed for the second goal with a flurry of action in the box that saw the Maroons battle to keep it tied up.

Radford outshot Roanoke 15-5. The Highlanders did not allow the Maroons any shots in second half. Corners were 8-2 in Radford's favor.

"We certainly possessed the ball fairly well, but our attacking edge and quality was not there to really create clear chances," Reeves said. "As always we will use this to learn and improve as we look to maximize the ability of our group."

The spring season continues for Radford on Saturday, April 11, at the University of Charleston in West Virginia. The Golden Eagles notched 21 victories a year ago and fell in the championship game of the NCAA DII tournament to Lynn, 3-2. The Highlanders faced off with Charleston last season in a preseason exhibition game at Cupp Stadium.
