BASEBALL LANDS FOUR ON VASID ALL-STATE FIRST TEAM

RADFORD, Va. – Radford was well represented on the 2015 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Baseball team, which was released Friday morning. The Highlanders tied NCAA national champion Virginia with four first-team honorees: Josh Gardiner (2B), Patrick Marshall (DH), Michael Boyle (P) and Ryan Meisinger (P).

Despite missing the last nine games of the season, Gardiner still earned a Big South batting title during the regular season with his .368 average. He finished second among Big South players in on-base percentage (.451) and stole a team-high 18 bases in 22 attempts.

An ABCA Atlantic Region First-Team selection, Marshall was voted the state's top designated hitter. The Fredericksburg, Va., native was voted First-Team All-Big South after leading Radford with 12 home runs and 59 RBI. Marshall batted .327 in 59 appearances, scoring 44 runs and notching 69 hits, 32 of which were for extra bases.

Boyle, the Highlanders' left-handed ace, joined Virginia's Nathan Kirby and Liberty's Jared Lyons as first-team pitchers. In June, Boyle became the first player in Radford history to be drafted by the LA Dodgers. He was a First-Team All-Big South selection and was named to the Big South all-tournament team. The ABCA Atlantic Region Second-Team pick set a program record with 10 wins in his junior campaign and led the league in that category.

After recording 17 saves, which were tied for the top mark in the nation, Meisinger was selected as one of the Commonwealth's top two relief pitchers. He joined UVa's Josh Sborz, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series last month. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in June, Meisinger was voted to the NCBWA's All-America Second Team and the ABCA's Atlantic Region First Team. He posted an unblemished 5-0 record and a 1.62 ERA in his junior campaign. He was a First-Team All-Big South selection and voted to the Big South all-tournament team. Meisinger holds Radford's career ERA record (2.60) and is 12-1 on the mound for the Highlanders.

The Cavaliers led the way with six total players on the all-state team. Twelve of the state's 13 Division I baseball programs had at least one representative, with Richmond and VCU matching the Highlanders with four total selections, Virginia Tech garnering three and both George Mason and Liberty snagging two honorees.
