COLMER’S PK PROPELS MEN’S SOCCER TO DRAW WITH DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore defender Fraser Colmer converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute to lift Radford to a 1-1 draw with defending national champion Virginia Tuesday night in a non-conference men's soccer exhibition at Klöckner Stadium.

"This was a good exhibition game for us to improve as a group, work on our game sharpness and see players execute certain roles against a very strong opponent," head coach Marc Reeves noted. "During the preseason, our coaching staff gets to see how our new players fit in and the level of depth we hopefully will have as the season unfolds. I thought tonight a number of players delivered solid minutes. We will remain focused on being ready for our season opener against Dayton, which is our main priority."

Todd Wharton, a senior midfielder for the Cavaliers, netted the match's first goal in the 31st minute. However, the Highlanders' defense was able to prevent No. 2-ranked UVa from scoring the go-ahead goal after Colmer's PK late in the second half.

Following full time, the two teams played a 10-minute overtime period, but neither side scored. The Cavaliers out-shot Radford, 13-9, while both teams put three shots on goal and attempted one corner kick.

RU continues its exhibition slate Friday against Charleston (W.Va.). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Cupp Stadium.
