MEN’S SOCCER COLLIDES WITH NO. 25 GEORGETOWN IN D.C.



SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford faces its first true road game of the season Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Highlanders visit Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., for a non-conference men's soccer fixture with No. 25 Georgetown.
  • RU is seeking its first win over a nationally-ranked foe since defeating 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina, 1-0, on Nov. 1 of last season.
  • The Hoyas won the previous encounter, 2-0, on Sept. 2, 2011.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • RU is unbeaten (3-0-1) through its first four matches for the first time since 1995.
  • Entering the weekend, the Highlanders are ranked 10th in the NSCAA South Region.
  • Five of Radford's seven goals scored this season are by underclassmen.
  • Two of those underclassmen, Sivert Daehlie and Finn Tiedemann, lead the Highlanders with four points apiece.
  • Their two goals are tied for second among Big South freshmen.
  • Evan Szklennik has taken a team-best 12 shots up top for RU.
 
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
  • Record: 1-2-1
  • Georgetown has played a brutal schedule thus far, battling three nationally-ranked teams through its first four matches.
  • The Hoyas upended top-ranked UCLA, 3-1, on Monday night behind two goals from Brett Campbell and one from Arun Basuljevic (BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 2014).
  • Georgetown had not scored in a match prior to its three-goal outburst on the Bruins.
  • The Hoyas tied for first in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll with Creighton, which is the No. 1 team in the nation this week.
  • Junior Joshua Yaro and senior Brandon Allen were named BIG EAST Preseason Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year, respectively.
  • Brian Wiese is in his 10th season as head coach of the Hoyas. He has guided Georgetown to the NCAA Tournament four times, including the last two years.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford opens a two-game homestand Friday, Sept. 18 against Appalachian State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cupp Stadium.
  • The match is part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, which plays Southern Virginia at 4 p.m.
