SOFTBALL RENEWS SERIES WITH NORFOLK STATE WEDNESDAY



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team heads back out on the road for a mid-week doubleheader at Norfolk State on Wednesday. First pitch of the opener from NSU Softball Field is set for 1 p.m.
 
The in-state foes will be meeting for the first time since 2006, when the Highlanders took an 8-0 six-inning victory in Norfolk.
 
SETTING THE STAGE
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 9-5
  • Radford is three wins away from equaling its total from all of last season. The Highlanders posted their ninth win of the 2015 campaign on April 1.
  • Abby Morrow ranks third in the nation in walks allowed per seven innings at 0.39. She has issued just three free passes on the season and none in 27 innings over her last five starts.
  • Morrow owns a 2.59 ERA on the season (seventh in the Big South) and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of her last four outings.
  • Radford's 2.93 team ERA and .238 opponents batting average rank second in the conference.
  • Freshman Marissa Yow shares the Big South lead with seven doubles and ranks sixth with a .390 average. She has also totaled a team-high 11 RBIs.
  • The Highlanders are hitting .309 as a team, with Marissa Gagliano (.370), Summer Robinson (.360) and Becky Mantel (.357) also over the .350 mark.
  • Mantel leads the team with 12 runs scored and is second with 10 RBIs.
  • Gagliano has totaled 11 runs, eight RBIs and eight stolen bases.
  • Robinson has recorded a team-high 18 hits, including four doubles and two triples, while driving in nine runs.
 
SCOUTING NORFOLK STATE
  • Record: 2-4
  • Norfolk State has played all of its games at home, including a 2-2 split with Rhode Island last weekend. The Spartans swept a doubleheader on Saturday (4-3 and 8-4) before losing both Sunday games (3-2 and 9-6).
  • Its other two losses came to George Washington on Feb. 27.
  • Junior shortstop Mikki Haury has seven hits in nine at-bats on the season.
  • Haury did not play in NSU's first two games and made her first two starts on Sunday, going a combined 6 for 7 at the plate. Haury came into the season batting .220 for her career.
  • Freshman Stephanie Davenport has started five games and is 4 for 6 with four RBIs, while junior first baseman Kayla McNair shares the team-lead with seven hits.
  • Norfolk State is batting .261 as a team.
  • Sophomore pitchers Megan Przeslawski and Marissa Marrero have each made three starts in the circle. Przeslawski is 1-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 17 innings, while Marrero is 1-3 with a 4.48 ERA in 25 innings. They have combined for 35 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Radford travels to Western Carolina for another non-conference doubleheader Saturday, with the games scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
