RADFORD, Va. – Radford pumped out 12 hits, while holding off an East Tennessee State ninth inning comeback in a 6-5 avenging border clash victory on Ladies' Night at RU Baseball Stadium.

After Blake Rowlett gave the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the second, the Highlander bats came alive.

The bottom half of the inning saw RU put runners on second and third, but was unable to push across any runs.

Radford loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, adding two runs on a Chris Coia two-run chopper over third baseman's head, giving the Highlanders a 2-1 lead.

One batter later, Shane Johnsonbaugh reached on fielders' choice, putting Highlanders on the corners. Three pitches later, Johnsonbaugh broke for second, forcing a throw from catcher Hagen Owenby. Luke Wise broke home on the throw, extending the lead to 3-1.

ETSU saw its first two batters open the inning on back-to-back singles as the hot hitting Trey York stepped up to dish. York lined a bases clearly double into the left-center field gap to tie the game at three

The Bucs would go on to load the bases, before RU starter Tyler Swarmer forced a fielders' choice ground ball to Danny Hrbek. Hrbek tagged the runner between second and third to get the Highlanders out of the potential disastrous inning.

Radford got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning on an opposite field home run from Trevor Riggs and RBI triple from Colby Higgerson. The two runs gave RU a 5-3 lead after five innings.

Ryan Sande came out of the Highlander bullpen and shutout down the Buccaneer bats, allowing only two hits in three innings of relief.

The Highlanders would receive a much needed insurance run in the eighth on their second triple of the night, this time off the bat of Hrbek.

Austin Ross came on in his second straight save opportunity in the top of the ninth as the Highlanders looked to close out the contest.

ETSU put two runners on base via a walk and a dropped pop up. A Kevin Phillips RBI single and Rowlett RBI fielders' choice pulled the Bucs within 6-5 of the Highlanders.

With two outs and a runner on second, Ross punched out pinch hitter Andrew Lasure to secure the Highlanders 6-5 avenging border clash win.

After five consecutive non-conference games, Radford steps back into Big South action, hosting Gardner-Webb for a three-game weekend series.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought we played well. ETSU had the chance to add to its lead in the fifth inning and Tyler Swarmer made a big pitch in to get us out of a jam. Even though he only gave up two runs, five or more could have been scored in that inning. For the first time in a long time, we expanded the lead and scored when we needed to in that eighth inning. We had some big hits in the middle of the order. Tonight, we played as a group and a lot of guys contributed. It's a good win for us. We always have good games with ETSU. I enjoy playing them, because they are a good team and coached well. Just a class act program. ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
