RADFORD EARNS 1-1 DRAW IN FINAL HOME EXHIBITION MATCH

RADFORD, Va. – In their final home exhibition match of the 2016 preseason, Radford used a late first half goal off the boot of Jakob Strandsäter as the Highlander defense held strong in the second half, earning a 1-1 Thursday night draw versus preseason NCAA Division II No.2 Charleston (W.Va.).

"Tonight was great preseason test against a physical and technical Charleston team. They are extremely well coached, which made us perform well," said head coach Marc Reeves. "I was pleased with the way we defended and I thought the attacking side was much improved from our first exhibition."

The Golden Eagles and Highlanders split possession time during the opening minutes of the first half, before Felipe Rafael Antonio won a possession at the top of the box, firing a shot past Aitor Pouseu Blanco for a goal on the left side of the frame. The Antonio goal in the 29th minute gave Charleston an early 1-0 lead.

Almost 13 minutes later, Strandsäter struck a ball at the Golden Eagle goalkeeper as the ball spun into the back of the net off the attempted save by Fabian Veit. Strandsäter's equalizer in the 41st minute would be only Highlander goal in the half as they managed three shots on goal, with two hitting the crossbar.

Radford and Charleston's defense went back and forth in the second 45-minute half, but neither team could find the back of the net.

The Highlanders won the shot advantage, out shooting the Golden Eagles 11-3 in the match, including a 7-4 mark in the first half. RU also claimed the corners battle 5-1.

"The recover side things are the most important piece now as we wrap-up preseason play on Saturday and prepare for opening weekend," Reeves added. "We had some good individual performances tonight and most importantly as a group, we need to build on that."

Radford concludes preseason and exhibition play on Saturday, traveling to Huntington, W.Va. for a 4 p.m. matchup with Marshall. The Highlanders defeated the Thundering Herd 1-0 in a regular season contest a season ago.
