TURK'S PK GIVES HIGHLANDERS 2-1 WIN AT MARSHALL



HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Radford men's soccer squad finished their preseason schedule with a 2-0-1 record as Zachary Turk broke a 1-1 match in the 76th minute on a penalty kick, earning a 2-1 victory over Marshall, Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
"A good preseason game in which our group collectively performed well," said head coach Marc Reeves. "We had several strong individual performances, but I liked the way we showed some character the second half to find a way to win the match."
 
The Highlanders came out and pressed the Thundering Herd offense early, controlling possession early in the match.
 
Neil Martorana got Radford on the board in the 21st minute as the junior took control of the ball off a Marshall defender rebound, finding the back of the net from just inside the box.
 
Marshall evened the score with nine seconds remaining in the first half as Jacob Purpero finished off a corner kick from the boot of Chris Taibi.
 
The Thundering Herd offense came out in the second half firing on all cylinders, but the Highlander defense held strong.
 
Radford's fifth preseason goal came off a penalty kick from Turk, ensuring that the Highlanders would finish preseason with a winning record for the third consecutive season.
 
Despite holding a 5-4 shot advantage and 10-3 corners advantage, Marshall only managed one goal.
 
"We now need to use this next week wisely as we continue our preparations for opening weekend and two strong opponents," Reeves noted.
 
Radford will now begin preparing for its season opening weekend as the Highlanders take on North Carolina St. on Friday and Lehigh on Sunday in the JMU Invitational.
