CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer team held a potent Charleston attack off the scoreboard for nearly 70 minutes but fell to the host Cougars 1-0 Sunday afternoon in its final non-conference match of the season.

Charleston (7-3), which had scored 15 goals in its six consecutive wins heading into the match, got the lone tally off of cross into the box at the 68:40 mark. The Highlanders appeared to have Cougar forward Jessica Schifer covered at the top of the six-yard box, but she was somehow able to get a foot on the ball and deflect it into the right side.

Radford (2-4) controlled much of the possession after the goal and had a couple of opportunities to tie it, but wasn't able to convert, resulting in its third one-goal defeat of the season.

In the 76th minute, Jordan Lundin sent a free kick from near midfield just into the left side of the box. The ball caromed across the box and Nelia Perez charged forward to rip a shot from 16 yards out, but it went high. The Highlanders drew another set piece in the 86th minute and Jane Everett was able to head a Lundin corner kick toward the back post. However, Cougars' keeper Lauren Killian was there for the save.

Courtenay Kaplan played a strong game in goal for RU, recording a career-high nine saves, all of them with the game still scoreless. Five of the stops came in the first-half, including a nifty kick-save on a cross-box shot in the 27th minute – one of the few great chances the Cougars had against the Highlander defense despite controlling possession.

Charleston finished with a 14-5 advantage in shots, but it was just a 6-5 edge after halftime. The Highlanders also had all three of their corner kicks in the second 45 minutes.

"We tested our team with extreme circumstances today," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "Playing on a day less rest than them after traveling a great distance and playing in extreme heat and humidity was tough. They are a quality side and I thought we defended great in the first half. The second half was an even game and we had chances. We look forward to conference play."

The Highlanders will now have almost a week to prepare for their Big South opener Saturday at Winthrop.
