RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team is ready to begin Big South Conference play as it travels to Winthrop for a Saturday afternoon match. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the match being streamed live on the Big South Network.
The Highlanders (2-4) had four one-goal decisions in their six non-conference matches and the matchup with Winthrop (3-5) figures to be a similarly tight contest. The last 11 meetings between the teams have been decided by one goal or less, with six going to overtime and three ending in draws, including last year's regular-season finale.
Radford enters conference action leading the league in goals against average at 1.17 and fewest shots allowed at 11.2 per game. Individually, freshman Courtenay Kaplan ranks fourth in goals against (1.23) and save percentage (.788). Offensively, the Highlanders are averaging 12.0 shots per game, led by Jasmine Casarez and Jordan Lundin, who are eighth and ninth in the Big South, respectively. Lundin is also tied for third with her three assists. Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Nelia Perez stands third on the team in shots.
The teams share just one common opponent this season, with each owning shutouts of USC Upstate. RU took a 2-0 victory at home, while Winthrop won 1-0 on the road.
The Eagles have played five one-goal games in eight contests and average 10.0 shots per game. Freshman Keeley Leising leads the way with three goals on 14 shots, while senior Lauren Watts and freshman Greta Conboy have two goals each. Senior goalkeeper Karly Gustafson has appeared in all eight matches and has a 2-4 record with 27 saves.
