RADFORD TAKES ON WINTHROP IN FINAL SATURDAY MATCH

SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford travels to the Palmetto State for its final Big South Saturday contest as the Highlanders take on Winthrop in a 7 p.m., battle.
  • Meeting for the 37th time, the all-time series is locked at 16-16-4 after the Highlanders collected a 2-0 victory in 2016.
  • The 2016 win snapped Radford's five-match winless streak to the Eagles.
  • In the last seven meetings neither team has scored more than two goals and five of the games have been decided by a goal or tied.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 8-4-2 (3-1-1 Big South)
  • Radford is coming off one of the biggest wins in program history as the Highlanders knocked off No. 10 Virginia 1-0 on Tuesday night for the first win over the Cavaliers in 13 meetings all-time.  
  • Outshot 12-7 in the match and 6-3 on frame, Sivert Daehlie gave the Highlanders the win in the 61st minute off a beautiful ball from Victor Valls.
  • The game winner marked the 14th of his career, increasing his career total to 29, moving into sole possession of seventh in program history.
  • The shutout was the fourth on the season by the Highlanders and Nicolas Mertzokat, moving the senior into a two-way for 10th in program history.
  • Mertzokat finished with six saves, giving him 48 on the season and six matches of four-plus saves.
  • He now ranks fifth in the conference and 57th nationally in saves.
  • Radford's defense is 69th nationally with a 1.092 goals against average. The Highlanders have limited opponents to 16 goals and only 67 shots on frame in 155 attempts.
  • Assisting on the game winning goal on Tuesday night, Valls now joins three other Highlanders with four-plus assists.
  • Evan Szkelnnik leads the team with seven assists, ranking 20th in the country. Neil Martorana follows in 55th place with five assists.
  • With 27 total assists, Radford is 14th in the country, while eight different players have assisted on a goal.
  • Ranking eighth in the country with 31 goals scored, Kieran Roberts and Daehlie have combined for 26 of the goals.
  • Radford is the only school in the country with two players inside the Top 10 in goals scored.
  • Roberts leads the nation in goals (15), goals per game (1.07), shots per game (5.14) and shots on goal per game (2.79). The redshirt junior also ranks third with 30 points and 2.14 points per game.
  • With 15 goals, Roberts has more goals than 69 NCAA DI teams.
  • Daehlie ranks sixth nationally with 11 goals, while chipping in 25 points for seventh.
  • Averaging 2.21 goals per match, Radford's mark is 10th best in the nation, while ranking 14th with a 6.29 points per game mark.
  • The Highlander offense is averaging 14.29 shots per game and 6.29 shots on goal, ranking inside the Top 40 nationally in both categories.
  • Using the help of his four-goal match, Roberts moves back into the nation's lead with 15 goals and a 1.15 goals per game clip.
 
SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • Record: 3-9-1 (1-3-0 Big South)
  • The Eagles enter the contest on a three-match skid, being outscored 7-1 during the stretch.
  • In Big South home matches, Winthrop is 0-2 with only one goal scored.
  • Winthrop has been shutout four times on the season, while being held to one goal on five different occasions.
  • Max Hasenstab leads the team offensively with seven goals and two assists for 16 points.
  • Hasenstab enters the match with 41 career goals, which is second among active NCAA DI players.
  • Rasmus Arousell is second with three goals (six points) and Nil Vinyals leads the team with three assists.
  • Six different Eagles have tallied a goal and 11 have assisted on a goal.
  • Winthrop has been outscored 22-14 on the season, including 11-5 in the first half.
  • Opponents have outshot the Eagles 222-120 on the season, including a 123-53 clip in the second half.
  • Opposing teams are averaging 17.1 shots per match against the Eagles. Winthrop is averaging a 9.2 clip.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford returns to Cupp Stadium Oct. 25 to host Longwood for its final home regular season match.
  • The contest will be a rematch of the 2016 Big South Tournament Championship, that saw Radford tally a goal in the 85th minute for a 1-0 victory. In the regular season matchup, Radford collected another 1-0 victory.
  • The Highlanders lead the all-time series 15-8-3.
