ECU AWAITS RADFORD FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLASH


 
GAME INFORMATION
 
SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Highlanders enter the second game of a three-game road trip with a 1-1 record after topping Georgia Southwestern at home, 72-63, and falling to Ohio State, 82-72, in Columbus
  • East Carolina owns a 1-0 record thanks to a 76-50 victory over Coppin State in their home and season opener this past Sunday night
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Radford is 3-5 across eight all-time meetings with East Carolina
  • The first contest between the two institutions came on December 19, 1987 when the Highlanders defended their home turf in a 77-75 victory
  • The Highlanders and Pirates played each other for four straight years between 1987 and 1990 and then did it again from 2000-2003
  • The most recent meeting came on December 30, 2003 and it didn't go so well for the Highlanders, who fell 50-87, on the road
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 1-1 (0-0 Big South)
  • Redshirt freshman guard Carlik Jones was named Big South Freshman of the Week after averaging 17.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists on 65-percent shooting including a 67-percent clip from three-point range
  • Travis Fields, Jr. and Devonnte Holland each made their first career starts in a Radford uniform at Ohio State. It was the second game as a Highlander for Fields, Jr. and 29th for Holland
  • As a team, Radford shot 50 percent (11-for-22) from three-point range against Ohio State, their best shooting percentage from three since going 14-for-26 (54-percent) against Charleston Southern on Feb. 9, 2017
  • Radford has scored exactly 72 points in each of its first two games of the season after averaging 65.3 points per game in 2016-17
  • The Highlanders' bench has outscored opposing benches by a combined tally of 77-35 through two games
  • Head Coach Mike Jones is utilizing his squad's depth, with 15 of the team's 16 eligible players having already seen game action
 
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
  • Record: 1-0 (0-0 AAC)
  • ECU was picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the American Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll following a run of three straight losing seasons
  • Head Coach Jeff Lebo enters his eighth season at the helm of the Pirates, accumulating a 115-118 record thus far
  • Three of the team's top four scorers – Kentrell Barkley, B.J. Tyson and Jeremy Sheppard – returned from a season ago. The trio combined to score more than 50-percent of the Pirates' points in 2016-17.
  • ECU's defense shined in its season opening win against Coppin State, holding the Eagles to a shooting percentage of 24.6-percent from the floor and 23.1-percent from three
  • The Pirates also outrebounded Coppin State by a large 47-30 margin
  • 10 different players pulled down multiple rebounds in the contest
  • Barkley picked up where he left off last season, scoring 14 points and bringing down seven rebounds in the season opener
