SETTING THE STAGE
- The month of December opens with the 36th all-time meeting between New River Valley foes as Radford (3-1) looks to snap a seven-game skid to Virginia Tech (6-2) on Sunday.
- Radford is looking to defeat ACC opponents in back-to-back seasons for the third time in program history (87-88, 88-89, 06-07, 07-08, 16-17).
- Radford enters the game with a 1-1 record in road contests, while the Hokies are 4-0 at home and playing their first home game since Nov. 19.
- The Highlanders will start a stretch where they will only play two home games in seven December games.
- Virginia Tech plays host to its first and only non-conference opponent from the Commonwealth. The Hokies will play Virginia twice in ACC play.
- The only common opponent between the two teams not in eithers conference is West Virginia. Virginia Tech dropped a neutral site matchup to the No. 11 Mountaineers 79-61 on Nov. 25. Radford will take on the border foe on Dec. 16 in Charleston, W. Va.
SERIES HISTORY
- Radford's last win in the all-time series came on Nov. 10, 2006 with a 67-60 win in Blacksburg.
- The 2017 meeting will be the first not played on Dec. 21 in five years will the last coming on Nov. 25, 2009 in Radford.
- Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 26-9 with a 15-4 record at home.
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
- Once again, the Cardiac Kids provided a thrilling finish last time out, overcoming a 15-point second-half deficit to improve Radford's winning streak to 18 straight inside the Dedmon Center with a 56-53 Education Day victory over UNC Greensboro on Nov. 28.
- UNC Greensboro led for 35:22 with the Highlanders leading for a mere 52 seconds in the comeback.
- Radford has now played 16 games decided by three points or less since the 2015-16 campaign, possessing a 12-4 mark in those games.
- Radford improves to 22-11 in games decided by five-points or less during head coach Mike McGuire's tenure.
- After going 4-10 in home games during McGuire's first season in 2013-14, McGuire has guided the Highlanders to a 36-8 record inside the Dedmon Center, including a league-best 18 straight.
- For the first time since March 11, Radford had two players finish with double-doubles. Jayda Worthy led with a team-high 16 points, pulling down 11 rebounds. Worthy's senior counterpart, Janayla White tallied 15 points and a team-high 12 boards, including five on the offensive glass.
- Overcoming the 15-point deficit, Radford's defense held UNC Greensboro to a 29.2 field goal percentage in the second half, improving to 15-3 in its last 37 games when holding opponents below 60 points.
- Worthy and White combined to go 14 for 18 from the charity stripe in the win, helping improve Radford's season average to .705 as team.
- Scoring double-figures for the third time on the season, sophomore Khiana Johnson leads the team with 12.3 points per game.
- Joining Johnson and Destinee Walker (11.3) in double-figure scoring, Worthy is now averaging 10.3 ppg.
- Not far from averaging a double-double, White is averaging 9.3 ppg and 8.8 rebounds per game.
- On the other side of the ball, the Highlander defense is forcing 18.8 turnovers per game, while averaging 15.0 ppg off opponent miscues.
- In addition, Radford ranks fifth nationally in fewest turnovers with 61, averaging 15.3 per contest.
- Radford's defense is limiting opposing teams to only 53.3 ppg, ranking 12th nationally.
- Moving their feet on defense, the Highlanders have only committed 59 fouls, which is second-best in the nation, committing only 14.8 per game.
- Offensively, Radford sports four players shooting over 36 percent from the field.
- White leads the team with a 48.1 field goal percentage, while Worthy follows with a 42.4 clip.
- As team, Radford holds a 35.5 shooting percentage, ranking eighth in the league.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH
- Averaging 82.1 ppg, Virginia Tech has scored 90-plus points twice on the season and 80-plus two times as well. The scoring clip ranks 26th in the country.
- Owning a 20.4 scoring margin, the Hokie defense is holding opponents to 61.8 ppg.
- The scoring average is aided by a 44.9 field goal percentage, which surprisingly ranks sixth in the ACC.
- Opposing teams have committed 163 fouls, which has sent the Hokies to the free throw line 174 times, making 124 attempts to rank 11th nationally.
- Virginia Tech has four players averaging double-digits as JUCO transfer Taylor Emery leads the way with 16.1 per game and an 84.1 free throw percentage.
- Redshirt junior Regan Magarity follows, almost averaging a double-double with 13.4 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
- Junior guard Chanette Hicks can fill up a box as she is averaging 13.4 ppg, 7.5 assists per game, 4.0 steals per game and 3.4 rpg.
- Hicks ranks fifth nationally in steals per game and seventh in assists per contest.
- Rounding out the top scorers, Alexis Jean is averaging 13.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
- Jean leads the squad with a 52.5 field goal percentage, making 32 of 61 attempts.
- Virginia Tech is shooting 35.8 from behind the arc, making 67 of 187 attempts.
- Three Hokies have made 10 or more 3-pointers on the season with sophomore Kendyl Brooks leading the way with 21.
UP NEXT
- Radford continues its road swing on Thursday, traveling to Western Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest in Cullowhee, N.C.
- In the all-time series, Radford holds a 7-4 edge, including a dominating 67-39 win a season ago.
- The Catamounts (1-5) lone win on the season came over UNC Asheville 62-52 on Nov. 12. In all, Western Carolina will play five Big South opponents (Campbell, High Point, Gardner-Webb and Radford).
