CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Playing their last true non-conference road game of the season, Radford dropped a 39-27 contest to Western Carolina, Thursday night inside the Ramsey Center.
The Highlanders were led by a box score stuffing performance from Lydia Rivers. The redshirt sophomore finished with five points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.
Despite starting the game 2 for 13 from the field, Radford only trailed 21-16 at halftime. In the only quarter with double-figures scored, the Highlanders closed the first half gap with 11 second quarter points. Radford ended the opening half on a 6-3 swing to cut the deficit to five points.
Of Radford's five made field goals in the second half, four came in the third quarter, but Western Carolina hit two 3-pointers to push the lead to double-digits. Trailing by only 10 (34-24) with 10 minutes left to play, Radford's defense kept itself in the game for the first 30 minutes played.
Unfortunately, not in Radford's favor was going scoreless for the first 7:52 of the fourth quarter. The Highlander defense held the Catamounts to only five made free throws as both teams went 1 for 32 in the quarter. Rivers tallied all three points in the quarter for the Highlanders.
