RADFORD AND ELON MEET FOR FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS ON TUESDAY

RADFORD, Va. – Radford and Elon meet for the first time in seven years on Tuesday as the Highlanders kickoff a stretch of four straight games against North Carolina opponents with a 4 p.m. battle against the former Big South foe. The weekday matchup will be the lone meeting between the two teams in 2017.

LAST MEETING
  • Seth Canipe's walk-off two-run homer for Elon in the ninth inning completed a five-run rally and gave the Phoenix a 7-6 win over Radford on March 7, 2010.
  • Radford commanded a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning, allowed six unanswered that was capped off by Canipe's home run. Canipe finished 4 for 4 in the comeback win.
  • Five Highlanders finished with multi-hit games: Brett Mollenhauer, Reggie Keen, Matt Mack, Robert Lamas and Matt Hillsinger.
  • Lamas led the Highlanders with two RBIs. Tyren Rivers, Jeff Kemp, Mollenhauer and Keen drove in a run apiece.
  • Radford starter Bobby Bolling allowed two runs in 5.1 innings. Elon received four shutout innings out of the bullpen from John Brebbia.
     
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 1-2
  • Radford was outscored 25-10 in its Opening Weekend series at North Florida. The Ospreys scored nine runs twice in the series.
  • In the three-game series, Radford struck out 35 times in 95 at bats. The Highlanders only collected 15 hits in the series.
  • Of Radford's 10 runs scored in the series, nine came as RBIs.
  • Making the most of his first weekend as a college baseball player, freshman first baseman Spencer Horwitz went 3 for 8 in the series with a home run and four RBIs.
  • In the 8-7 win over North Florida on Saturday, Horwitz drove in three runs, including two on a two-run home run.
  • Leadoff man Adam Whitacre joins Horwitz as the only other Highlander with three hits in the opening series. Whitacre went 3 for 12 with two runs scored and a RBI.
  • Cody Schneider led the Highlanders with two doubles in the series.
  • Finishing the opening series a combined 2 for 17 at the plate, Danny Hrbek and Colby Higgerson drove in two runs apiece.
  • Higgerson hit his first collegiate home run in the seventh inning of Saturday's win as the insurance run turned out to be extremely important as the Ospreys tacked on a run in the ninth.
  • Radford's defense committed eight errors in the opening series.
  • Highlander pitchers possess a 6.12 ERA in 25 innings pitched, allowing 17 earned runs.
  • Out of the bullpen, freshman Austin Gerber and sophomore Cameron Fritz provided strong innings.
  • Gerber yieled one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of relief on Sunday.
  • Fritz picked up his first win in a Radford uniform on Saturday, tossing 3.2 innings of one-run ball.
  • Radford went 8-5 against teams from North Carolina in 2016.
 
SCOUTING ELON
  • Record: 2-1
  • Elon hosted Big South member Longwood in a three-game series this past weekend. The Phoenix collected wins on Friday and Saturday, before dropping a 9-5 decision on Sunday.
  • On Saturday, Robbie Welhaf tossed the first no-hitter of the 2017 NCAA baseball season, and the first for Elon at the NCAA Division I level.
  • Welhalf walked one batter and plunked another one, facing just one over the minimum. He punched out a career-high eight batters in just his third career start.
  • Elon holds a .327 average after Opening Weekend, collecting 34 hits in 104 at bats. Fifteen of the Phoenix hits came as extra-base knocks, including 13 doubles.
  • Seven Elon batters collected four-plus hits in the series.
  • Kyle Jackson and Ryne Ogren led the way with five hits apiece.
  • Jackson drove in four runs on two doubles and one home run.
  • Preseason All-CAA honoree CJ Young collected four hits, three coming as doubles and drove in four runs.
  • Phoenix pitchers struck out 27 Lancers, yielding only 16 hits in the series.
  • Elon has won each of the last six games, and nine of the last 10, against Radford.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford continues play against teams from the Tar Heel State on Friday as the Highlanders open up a three-game series against North Carolina.
  • The two foes last met on April 16, 1997 with Radford taking an 8-4 victory.
  • The all-time series is deadlocked at 1-1.
