SOFTBALL HEADS TO GEORGIA FOR I-75 CLASSIC



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team travels down to Georgia this weekend to play five games against three Atlanta-area programs, beginning with Friday's doubleheader against Kennesaw State. First pitch of the opener is set for 1 p.m.
 
The Highlanders will then head to head coach Aileen Morales' alma mater for a Saturday doubleheader against Georgia Tech (also a 1 p.m. start), before wrapping the trip with a single game at Georgia State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Live streams will be available for both of the Kennesaw State games, while the Georgia Tech doubleheader will air on ACC Network Extra via ESPN3.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 3-2
  • Radford opened its season with three wins in its first four games of the Chattanooga Challenge last weekend.
  • Junior catcher Maggie Rowe earned Big South Player of the Week honors after hitting .563 (9 for 16) with two home runs, three doubles and six RBIs.
  • Redshirt sophomore Marissa Gagliano hit .400 with five runs scored and was successful on all five stolen-base attempts.
  • Senior Summer Robinson added five hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.
  • Freshmen Hunter Mundy and Sofia Tapia each chipped in four hits and four RBIs. Mundy had a pair of doubles, while Tapia hit her first collegiate homer
  • A total of five first-year players started at least two of the games while recording at least one hit or one RBI
  • As a team, the Highlanders batted .323 with 11 doubles, while scoring 24 runs and totaling 10 stolen bases (on 10 attempts).
  • Abby Morrow opened her senior season by going 2-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 20 innings over three complete games. She totaled 15 strikeouts and just one walk.
  • Freshman Mallory Marsicek made two appearances in the circle, recording a complete-game win and totaling five strikeouts.
  • Radford scored first in four of the five games.
 
SCOUTING KENNESAW STATE
  • Record: 7-2
  • Kennesaw State won all four of its games at the Chattanooga Challenge, including a 3-1 victory over Radford in each team's finale.
  • Courtney Sutter accounted for all three of the Owls' runs in the game on a pair of home runs. The senior catcher is batting .444 with three homers, six RBIs and seven runs scored on the season.
  • Freshman outfielder Olivia Tamewitz leads the team with a .583 average (14 for 24) and six stolen bases, along with totaling three doubles and one home run.
  • Five other players are batting over .300 through nine games, led by Taylor Denton's .417 average with six RBIs. Noelle Winkles has added five doubles and six RBIs.
  • Senior Logan Viers is 3-1 with a 0.50 and four complete games in four starts, including the win against Radford. She has 26 strikeouts and six walks.
  • Redshirt freshman Alley Cutting is also 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA and four complete games, with 39 strikeouts and three walks.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH
  • Record: 3-8
  • Georgia Tech is coming off a 7-1 loss at home to Jacksonville State on Wednesday.
  • After losing their first five games, the Yellow Jackets had won three of five prior to that, including two over Iowa and one against Georgia State.
  • Samantha Pierannunzi leads the team in batting with .382 average, totaling three home runs, eight RBIs and seven runs scored.
  • Malea Ball is hitting .274 with three homers, two doubles nine RBIs and 10 runs.
  • As a team, Georgia Tech is hitting .242 with 12 homers and 38 runs in 11 games.
  • Three different pitchers have made at least three starts in the circle, with Jenna Goodrich holding a 2-2 record and 6.10 ERA in 28.2 innings. She has 17 strikeouts and 18 walks.
  • Brooke Barfield is 1-3 with a 6.07 ERA in 30 innings, striking out 18 and walking 13. Emily Anderson holds a 3.20 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 4 walks in 15.1 innings, but has an 0-3 record.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
  • Record: 8-3
  • Georgia State has won four of its last five games, including an 8-4 decision at Mercer on Wednesday.
  • The Panthers went 3-1 at the North Florida Invitational last weekend, posting victories over South Carolina, Kansas and South Dakota State.
  • GSU is hitting .285 on the season and totaled just five homers in 11 games, but two of them came on Wednesday, including one by Remington Hasty, who leads the team with eight RBIs.
  • Four other Panthers have contributed at least six RBIs, while Ivie Drake is batting .385 with nine runs scored and Morgan Brown has a team-high 15 hits and four stolen bases.
  • Georgia State has five pitchers with ERAs of 3.27 or lower, combining for 35 runs allowed, 30 strikeouts and 21 walks in 81.2 innings.
  • Amanda Chance has made a team-high four starts and is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in 23.2 innings. Emily Chance holds a 2-1 record and 3.18 ERA in 22 innings.
