SOFTBALL HOSTS NC CENTRAL FOR PAIR TUESDAY NIGHT



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team plays its final tune-ups before starting conference play when it hosts NC Central Tuesday night for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
 
The teams will be meeting for the first time and the opening game will air on the Big South Network.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 10-11
  • Radford put an end to a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout of St. John's in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
  • Kayla Huffman recorded her first career complete-game shutout, while allowing just four hits and tying a career-best with six strikeouts.
  • The Highlanders hit four home runs in Sunday's first game, the most since equaling the program record of five in a win over Liberty in 2014.
  • Six different players now have multiple home runs on the season, including four with at least three.
  • Brittany Wratchford has a team-high five homers, along with four doubles, in 51 at-bats on the year. She had one double and one longball in 33 career at-bats previously. She ranks fourth in the Big South with a .667 slugging percentage and tied for fifth in homers, while standing second on the team with 14 RBIs.
  • Freshmen Hunter Mundy and Sofia Tapia have each hit three homers while combining for 27 RBIs. Mundy leads the team with 15 RBIs, with Tapia at 12 after hitting a pair of two-run homers Sunday.
  • Marissa Gagliano has reached base in eight straight games, ranks second in the conference with 16 stolen bases and has scored a team-high 17 runs.
  • Kayla Bishton remains the team leader with a .333 average and 20 hits.
  • Abby Morrow's eight victories still lead the Big South. She has 47 strikeouts and 13 walks in 80.2 innings this season and is up to 308 career strikeouts, one shy of tying for fourth on the program's all-time list.
 
SCOUTING NC CENTRAL
  • Record: 3-15
  • NC Central last played on March 11, dropping an 11-1 five-inning decision at Liberty.
  • The Eagles are 0-5 against Big South teams with two losses to Gardner-Webb and one to both Campbell and Winthrop. Their victories have come Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton and Rhode Island.
  • NC Central is hitting .208 as a team and averaging 1.8 runs per game, with just two total home runs.
  • Miriam Duen has a team-best .311 average and 14 hits.
  • Dominique Wilson has one homer and a team-high six RBIs, while Kim Mobley has four doubles and four RBIs.
  • Wilson is also the team's top pitcher, owning all three wins and a 4.85 ERA for the season. She has 34 strikeouts and 35 walks in 56.1 innings.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford opens its Big South schedule this weekend at Liberty. The commonwealth rivals will play a single game Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader.
