SOFTBALL WELCOMES NORFOLK STATE FOR WEDNESDAY DOUBLEHEADER

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team is back at home Wednesday afternoon, hosting Norfolk State for a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch of the opener slated for 2 p.m.
 
The Highlanders will look to improve on their 4-1 home record this season and remain unbeaten all-time against the in-state foe Spartans. Radford has won all 10 games, including a doubleheader sweep (8-0 and 3-0) on the road last season. Norfolk State will be making its first visit to Radford since the teams' initial meetings in 2000.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 13-13
  • Kayla Huffman carries a streak of 21.2 scoreless innings into today's action, spanning five appearances and three starts. She has allowed just 16 hits and struck out 29 in that span. 
  • The sophomore now has a team-best 3.04 ERA, ranking fourth in the Big South. She is ninth with 48 strikeouts in just 48.1 innings of work.
  • Along with her conference-leading 10 wins, Abby Morrow is seventh with a 3.35 ERA and 56 strikeouts, while her 14 walks are second-fewest among qualified pitchers, with the third-most innings of work.
  • Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Hunter Mundy has a five-game hitting streak, nine-game reached base streak and eight consecutive contests with an RBI.
  • Mundy has hits in 9 of her last 11 games overall, raising her average 80 percentage points to .347, eighth in the conference. She is tied for seventh with a team-high 22 RBIs, including 11 in the last eight games.
  • Brittany Wratchford is coming off a career-high four RBI game against Liberty, is tied for fifth in the league with her six home runs and sixth in slugging (.621). She is also second on the team with 18 RBIs.
  • Radford now has 23 home runs on the season, ranking second in the Big South and 42nd nationally in homers per game (0.88). Mundy is second on the squad with five, while Kayla Bishton, Maggie Rowe, Sofia Tapia and Summer Robinson each have three.
  • In its five home games, the team has totaled nine longballs.
  • The Highlanders have racked up 35 doubles on the season, with Rowe tied for fifth in the conference with eight, and Bishton adding seven. Rowe has 15 RBIs, while Bishton and Tapia each have 13.
  • Marissa Gagliano is 10th in the league with 21 runs scored, while Tapia is fourth with 19 walks.
  • Radford remains unbeaten at 9-0 when allowing two or fewer runs.  
 
SCOUTING NORFOLK STATE
  • Record: 8-9
  • Norfolk State dropped two of three to Delaware State in its MEAC opening series over the weekend, winning the middle game 7-2 before losing Sunday's finale 7-0.
  • The Spartans are 0-3 in true road games this season, including a 7-6 decision at Campbell on March 4, their only previous contest against a Big South opponent.
  • Norfolk St. is batting .262 as a team with 21 doubles and 11 home runs, averaging 3.7 runs per game.
  • Sophomore Hunter Halford is hitting .344 with three doubles, two homers and a team-high 14 RBIs.
  • Senior outfielder Devon Bitler leads the way with a .385 average and 20 hits, while sophomore catcher Kylee Lopez has a team-high three homers and is second with 12 RBIs.
  • Halford and junior Megan Przeslawski have logged all the work in circle, combining for a 3.14 ERA, but just 35 strikeouts in 116 innings.
  • Halford is 5-4 with a 2.52 ERA in 66.2 innings, while Przeslawski has a 3-5 mark and a 3.97 ERA over 49.1 innings.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford returns to conference play with its second road series, traveling to Gardner-Webb for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Saturday's first game is set for a 2 p.m. start and will air on ESPN3.
