RADFORD FACES GEORGE MASON IN MIDWEEK TWO-GAME SERIES

RADFORD, Va. – Radford takes its spring break trip up the Commonwealth to take on in-state foe George Mason in a two-game series starting on Tuesday. The Highlanders are looking for their first weekday win, holding an 0-5 record.

LAST MEETING
  • Travis McQueen struck out a career-high eight batters in 4.1 innings of relief as Radford battled back for an 8-7 series salvaging victory over George Mason in the Highlanders final non-conference weekend series on April 24, 2016.
  • Luke Wise and Trevor Riggs led the Highlanders with two hits each, scoring two runs apiece.
  • Shane Johnsonbaugh and Wise finished with two RBIs each. Wise had a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
  • Radford had five extra-base hits in the game.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 2-9
  • In a three-game series against Kent State, Quinnipiac and Wake Forest; Radford was outscored 27-11.
  • The Highlanders have allowed double-digit hits in six games.
  • Radford's lone win on the weekend was a special one as Danny Hrbek tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in Radford baseball history in only his third career start. Hrbek totaled a career-high eight strikeouts, yielding no walks, facing just one batter over the minimum in a 4-0 Saturday win over Quinnipiac.
  • In the nine innings, Hrbek had three innings of two-plus strikeouts, throwing only 88 pitches in the contest that included 63 strikes. The only blemish on the day for the Highlanders was a throwing error in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Hrbek was honored with Big South Pitcher of the Week, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week and a Golden Spikes Award Golden Standard Performance nominee.
  • As a hitter, Hrbek is batting .190 with eight hits and two RBIs.
  • Kyle Butler leads the Highlanders offense with a .304 average and two multi-hit performances.
  • The Highlanders sport only two batters with double-digit hits on the season: Matt Roth (12) and Spencer Horwitz (10).
  • Roth posted two multi-hit games last week, giving him three on the season.
  • Horwitz is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, leading the Highlanders with five RBIs.
  • Richard De la Cruz had a productive four games a week ago, going 6 for 17 with three runs scored and two RBIs. De la Cruz was 3 for 3 in stolen base attempts against Quinnipiac.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON
  • Record: 4-7
  • The Patriots opened their home slate this past weekend with a three-game series with Marist. George Mason's lone win in the series came in a 10-9 Saturday victory, holding on despite a four-run ninth inning by the Red Foxes.
  • In the win, Randy Taveras led the way with two hits and four RBIs.
  • Logan Driscoll leads the team with 15 hits and 13 runs scored, commanding a .431 on-base percentage.
  • Leading the Patriots in batting average, Michael Smith holds a .342 clip, collecting 13 hits in 38 at bats. Smith has scored 12 runs and walked 10 times, including four hit by pitch.
  • Tyler Nelin has provided the power with four home runs and 12 RBIs. Driscoll follows with 10 RBIs.
  • The Patriots sport four players with double-digit hits on the season and two with double-digit runs scored.
  • Out of the bullpen, Saul Aguilera has not allowed an earned run in 5.2 innings pitched.
  • As a team, George Mason sports a .247 batting average and 5.27 ERA.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday, hosting Northern Kentucky for a four-game series.
  • The two opponents will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
  • The meeting is the first all-time between the two teams.
