DEAN TABBED BIG SOUTH WOMEN'S SOCCER FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford women's soccer has claimed weekly awards in back-to-back weeks now that freshman goalkeeper Lexi Dean has been tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week following another strong performance, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Dean has started all three games of her young career between the sticks for head coach Ben Sohrabi and already has two shutouts and two wins. Friday night against Chattanooga she made four saves to keep the Mocs off the board and push the Highlanders to 3-0-0 on the season.

Her biggest moment of the game and of the season so far came in the 60th minute when the Mocs earned a corner kick and dangerously played it into a crowded six-yard box. The Highlanders attempted a clearance, but the ball bounced only as far as Chattanooga's Maeve Kelly. Kelly took a touch and fired a right-footed strike towards the upper 90, but Dean intervened with a full extension diving save that deflected the ball up and over the bar to prevent Radford from going down.

Radford took that momentum and scored the go-ahead goal four minutes later when Jessica Wollmann calmly finished a ball in the six-yard box from Jane Everett and Nelia Perez.

Dean has allowed two goals and made 13 saves for a .867 save percentage on 34 shots faced in 2017.

"Lexi has worked extremely hard to earn her position on the field and while she still has a long way to go, we're excited about her potential as a Highlander," said assistant coach Chris Barrett. "She had an unbelievable save to keep us in the game against Chattanooga and we hope she continue to play at a high level."

The Fairfax Station, Va. native joins sophomore defender Allyson Giannone and freshman midfielder Gabi Paupst as having earned Big South weekly honors this season.

Dean and the Highlanders travel to Spartanburg, S.C. this Friday, Sept. 1 to take on the Wofford Terriers at 7 p.m.
