RADFORD TRAVELS TO ETSU WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOR A BORDER BASH

SETTING THE STAGE
  • Separated by 147 miles of mostly Interstate 81, Radford and ETSU have only met six times in the all-time series. That series is knotted at 2-2-2.
  • The two border foes met in a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2009, but did not meet again until 2012.
  • In the last meeting, Radford and ETSU battled to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 5, 2015 inside Cupp Stadium.
  • The Highlanders hold the last win in the series with a 1-0 victory in Johnson City, Tenn., on Sept. 6, 2014.
  • Radford head coach Bryheem Hancock and ETSU head coach Bo Oshoniyi have taken similar roads to becoming head coaches. The two played goalkeeper for the legendary Ray Reid, Hancock at UConn and Oshoniyi at Southern Connecticut State. Oshoniyi served as an assistant at South Florida in 2008 and Hanock replaced him as he moved to Wake Forest in 2009.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 2-2-0
  • Radford got back in the win column on Sept. 9, avenging its 2016 NCAA Tournament loss to Coastal Carolina with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night. The victory marked the first over the Chanticleers since Nov. 1, 2014.
  • The Highlanders dominated the first half, holding the Chanticleers without a shot, while scoring two of their seven shot attempts.
  • Radford has outshot opponents 57-36 on the season, ranking 36th nationally with 14.25 shots per game.
  • Of the 57 attempts, 23 have come on frame for an average of 5.75 per contest, ranking 58th in the country.
  • Kieran Roberts ranks second in the country with 6.25 shots per game and second with 3.50 shots on goal per game.
  • Siver Daehlie and Roberts tallied goals in the win over Coastal Carolina. Roberts collected his team-high fourth goal, which ranks second in the league. Daehlie earned his second header goal, ranking behind Roberts on the squad.
  • In addition, Daehlie leads the team with two assists.
  • Of Radford's seven goals, six have been assisted on.
  • Both goals in the win came off crosses by Max Edwards and Neil Martorana as the assists were the first on the season for the duo.
  • Edwards earned Big South Freshman of the Week for his efforts in the win over Coastal Carolina. The frosh entered the game in the 23rd minute, collecting an assist in the 32nd minute and playing the rest of the match.
  • The Highlander defense has only conceded four goals in the four matches, including one shutout. Opponents have only managed 14 shots on goal.
  • Nicolas Mertzokat has tallied nine saves, maintaining a .692 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING ETSU
  • Record: 2-1-1
  • The Buccaneers are currently riding a two-match winning streak with a pair of wins over Lipscomb (3-2) and Appalachian State (1-0).
  • ETSU has played in overtime in all four matches on the season.
  • Last time out, the Bucs' defense held App State to only five shots with one on goal in 93 minutes.
  • In the four matches, six different players have scored goals, while all six have been assisted on.
  • Bruno Andrade leads the Bucs in assists with two.
  • Fletcher Ekern appears to be the Bucs go to option on offense as he leads the team with 14 shots and seven on goal.
  • Ekern has tallied 21 career goals, needing five goals to tie the program record.
  • ETSU has taken 56 shots, averaging 14.0 per game, which ranks just behind Radford nationally in 41st.
  • The Bucs have put 25 attempts on frame, averaging 6.25 per game to rank 38th nationally.
  • In the second half, ETSU has taken 32 shots, compared to only 15 in the first half. The second half has also saw 13 of the 23 Buc corner kicks.
  • Jonny Sutherland has played every minute between the pipes for the Bucs, conceding five goals, while racking up 15 saves for a .750 save percentage.
