THREE HIGHLANDERS NAMED VaSID ALL-STATE; DIOP EARNS VaSID FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR HONORS


 
RADFORD, Va. – Freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop, redshirt senior forward Kieran Roberts and redshirt senior defender Myles Yorke were all named Second Team All-State with Diop earning Freshman of the Year honors, the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Diop enjoyed a breakout freshman season for the Highlanders. He scored nine goals and five assists for 23 points on his way to the Co-Big South Rookie of the Year award. He was also selected as a member of the All-Big South First Team, the Big South All-Freshman Team, and to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Third Team. He ranked top-10 among all players in the Big South in shots (2nd), shots per game (2nd), points (1st), points per game (1st), goals (2nd), goals per game (1st), assists (6th), assists per game (3rd) and game-winning goals (4th).
 
Roberts makes his second straight appearance on a VaSID All-State team after garnering First Team honors a year ago. In his final season at Radford, he was named to the All-Big South First Team after tallying six goals and two assists for 14 points. The Bournemouth, England native now sits seventh in career goals, sixth in career shots and 10th in career points in Radford program history.
 
Yorke anchored a stout Radford backline this season, starting 15 games in the heart of the defense. He was a Second Team All-Big South selection and ranked third on the team with 1,341 minutes played while providing one assist. As a unit, the Highlanders' defense allowed only 26 goals on the year, the second-least in the Big South, thanks in part to Yorke's veteran leadership.
 
The Highlanders finished 7-9 overall including a 5-3 record in conference play to place second in the regular season standings. It was the fifth straight season that Radford earned a top-two seed and a first round bye in the Big South Tournament.
 
Eight of the 11 Division I men's soccer teams in the state were represented across the major awards and all-state teams. James Madison led the state with five selections, while Radford, Virginia, and William & Mary had four selections.
 
VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
