RADFORD TRAVELS TO ELON TUESDAY FOR FIRST WEEKDAY TILT

RADFORD, Va. – Radford and Elon meet for the second straight season in the first Tuesday game of the NCAA Division I season as the two former Big South foes meet in a 4 p.m., battle. The weekday matchup will be the lone meeting between the two teams in 2018.

  • Andrew Nardi struck out a career-high nine batters in his first collegiate start, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings pitched as the Highlanders dropped its first weekday game of the season in a 10-1 decision to Elon.
  • Nardi faced 17 batters, yielding only two hits and two walks. Despite allowing a two-out home run to Cam Devanney in the bottom of the second, the lefthander punched out five of the first seven batters he faced.
  • Radford's lone run of the game came with one-out in the top of the sixth as Luke Wise lifted a 0-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for his fifth career home run. Wise ended Elon starter Jordan Barrett's no-hitter with the home run. Jonathan Gonzalez ended Barrett's perfect game bid in the fifth after reaching on a throwing error.
  • Of the 10 Phoenix runs, six came via home runs as Elon hit four in the victory.
  • Danny Hrbek, Spencer Horwitz and Wise were responsible for Radford's hits.
  • Trey Alderman and John Brocklebank combined for five strikeouts out of the bullpen.
     
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 2-1
  • Radford collected its first Opening Weekend series win since 2015 at Samford as the Highlanders outscored North Florida 28-21 in three games.
  • The Highlanders tallied 26 runs in the first two games of the series, both coming as wins. Radford's loss in the series came in a 7-2 decision on Sunday in which the Highlanders managed only three hits.
  • North Florida held a slight 30-28 edge in the hit column.
  • In the first three games of the season, Radford has 10 extra-base hits with seven coming as doubles.
  • Radford walked 11 times on Opening Day, finishing with 18 walks in the series.
  • Andrew Szamski was named the Big South's Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts during opening weekend.
  • Szamski earned the league's first award of the 2018 season after going 8 for 13 with six RBIs and five runs scored in Radford's Opening Weekend series win at North Florida. Of the eight hits, three were of the extra-base variety with two doubles and a home run.
  • Kyle Butler went 5 for 12 at the plate, scoring four runs and driving in three of his own.
  • Following Szamski's six RBIs was Spencer Horwitz, who finished with five RBIs, including a four-RBI effort on Opening Day.
  • Colby Higgerson and Matt Roth follow with three RBIs each.
  • Of Radford's 25 RBIs, nine different players are responsible for them.
  • The Highlanders were 5 for 6 on the base paths as five different players swiped a bag.
  • Leaving North Florida with a 6.58 team ERA, Radford received strong outings out of its bullpen as Austin Ross and Austin Gerber combined for 8.1 scoreless frames. The duo allowed only three hits, while striking out six.
  • Of North Florida's 28 hits, only five were of the extra-base variety.
 
SCOUTING ELON
  • Record: 0-3
  • Elon hosted Penn State on opening weekend, dropping a pair of one-run games.
  • In the three games, Elon managed nine runs on 17 hits with all nine coming as RBIs.
  • Joe Satterfield, Rhyne Ogren, Cam Devanney finished with two RBIs each.
  • Shawn Blake led the Phoenix at the plate, finishing 5 for 9 with four runs scored.
  • Elon possesses a 4.33 team ERA as 13 runs were earned.
  • Phoenix pitchers combined for 43 strikeouts with 15 coming out of the bullpen.
  • Jared Wetherbee punched out five batters in two innings of relief. Brandon Justice joined him with five strikeouts in 3.2 frames of relief.

  • Radford returns to action on Friday for a three-game series against Jacksonville State.
  • The Highlanders and Gamecocks will be meeting for the first-time in their histories.
