RADFORD OFF TO YELLOWHAMMER STATE FOR SERIES AT JACKSONVILLE ST.



RADFORD, Va. – Radford travels to the Yellowhammer State for the first time since 2015 as the Highlanders take on Jacksonville State for the first time in program history. The Highlanders opened the season with two dominating wins offensively and look to pick up their second series win of the season with three games in two days.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 2-2
  • Through the first four games of the season, Radford has collected 35 hits - 10 of them coming as extra-base hits and seven being two-baggers.
  • After recording 25 hits in the first two games of the season, Radford has been limited to 10 over the last two games.
  • On Tuesday, Radford had six hits through the first three frames, before recording only one in the final six innings.
  • The Highlanders are hitting .278 against left-handed pitching and .265 against righties.
  • With runners on base, Radford is 13 for 38, plating 11 RBIs with two outs.
  • Redshirt junior Andrew Szamski enters the weekend 8 for 16 with 13 total bags and has an .813 slugging percentage. Szamski is the reigning Big South Player of the Week, totaling six RBIs against North Florida.
  • Behind Szamski's eight RBIs is Spencer Horwitz with five RBIs and Colby Higgerson following with four RBIs.
  • Kyle Butler is right behind Szamski with .467 average with and seven hits. Butler has reached base safely in all four games this season, while leading the way with three multi-hit games.
  • Radford has 26 RBIs this season as nine different players are responsible for them.
  • The Highlanders are 6 for 8 on the base paths and five different players have swiped a bag.
  • The Highlander pitching staff has combined for a 5.29 ERA through four games.
  • Austin Ross and Austin Gerber have combined for nine scoreless frames with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed out of the bullpen.
 
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE
  • Record: 3-1
  • The Gamecocks are hitting .274 as a team with seven doubles and an Ohio Valley leading seven round trippers.  
  • Taylor Hawthrone, Trent Simpson and Andrew Naismith have 15 of Jacksonville State's 25 RBIs. The trio has recorded five RBIs each, while connecting for two home runs each.
  • Nic Gaddis leads the Gamecocks offensively with a .462 batting average. Gaddis leads the team with four doubles and a .563 on-base percentage.
  • Four different Gamecocks have recorded two multi-hit games through the first four games. Five Gamecocks have reached base in the first four games.
  • The Gamecocks are going into the weekend with a 4.89 ERA with 39 hits allowed and 28 strikeouts in 35 innings.
  • Jacksonville State's weekend rotation allowed only five earned runs in 15.1 frames against Southern Illinois.
  • Garrett Farmer and Colton Pate punched out five batters each in their starts a weekend ago. Pate yielded only one hit in five innings to earn the win.

  • The first game of the New River Valley Showdown is slated for Feb. 27 as Radford will be the first opponent for Virginia Tech inside the newly remodeled Union Park.
