RICHMOND, Va. – Quality chances in the offensive third continued to be elusive as the Radford men's soccer team fell to VCU, 3-0, at SportsBackers Stadium on Sunday evening.
Neither team found the breakthrough they were looking for in the first 45 minutes with the game remaining scoreless heading into halftime. It was VCU (1-1), though, that discovered its scoring touch before all was said and done.
In the 49th minute, Biska Biyomba brought down a long pass behind the Highlanders' (0-2) defense and boxed out oncoming defenders before finding Joseph Gonnella in the box. Gonnella took one dribble and fired a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
With the game still in reach the Highlanders battled hard to find an equalizer, but it wasn't meant to be as VCU doubled and then tripled its lead in the 82nd minute. Eli Lockaby scored his first goal of the season on a low strike from distance that just snuck inside the left post before Jared Greene turned a giveaway into a goal of his own just 20 seconds later.
Radford's best opportunity came in the first half when freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop received a pass just inside VCU's 18-yard box, turned, and fired a hard-hit ball on target. Rams goalkeeper Mario Sequeira managed to dive on the ball just in time, thwarting the chance.
The Rams outshot the Highlanders, 14-7, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Radford did earn four corner kicks compared to just one for VCU.
