RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team got an early test on Thursday night as James Madison came to Cupp Stadium for an exhibition match. The Highlanders played well but ultimately fell to the Dukes, 1-0.
The game began with a slow pace, but a couple of scoring chances from both sides. In just the second minute, the Dukes fired a shot from close to the goal that went wide of the net. A few minutes after that Radford had a scoring chance as Jessica Wollmann crossed the ball toward the middle of the field that went just wide of Nelia Perez wide open in the box.
James Madison kept knocking on the doorstep and one of the 10 first half shots found the back of the net. Haley Crawford dribbled just inside the box and fired a shot off her right foot that was placed in the upper right side of the goal. The score gave the Dukes a 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute.
Radford only managed to tally five total shots with two landing on goal. Jasmine Casarez recorded three of the five shots and had one on goal. Perez had the other shot on goal. Lexi Dean, who started in goal for the Highlanders, recorded three saves in 45 minutes of play.
Three of Radford shots came in the second half. The Highlanders defense stepped up and held JMU to only three shots in the final 45 minutes. With five minutes to play in regulation, Radford pushed the tempo and had some good looks, but a couple of offside calls and a few Duke takeaways preserved the 1-0 lead until the final whistle blew.
Radford will be back in action on Sunday, when they welcome Concord – a Division II team – to Cupp Stadium for its final exhibition match of 2018. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
