KAYLA THOMAS NAMED BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Playing a crucial role in the defensive back line against Appalachian State last Saturday, Kayla Thomas was named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

Thomas has played 90 minutes or more for three of the five matches this season. The latest came on Saturday night where Thomas was the only Highlander freshman that played a full 90 minute match. She helped the Highlander defense post its second shutout this season – and second in the last three matches.

"It was great to get another shutout Saturday," head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "Our defense played well as an entire group. Kayla is adapting well to the college game and fitting in nicely alongside some more experienced players."

In Saturday's 2-0 win, Appalachian State was held to only 10 shots and four of them were in the second half. The Highlanders defense played with a lot of finesse as there were only four fouls called against them and just one in the second half.

Following the Highlanders' Monday match vs. Elon at 7 p.m., Radford will return to Cupp Stadium on Saturday to face Charleston Southern in the conference opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., barring inclement weather from Hurricane Florence.
