RADFORD LACROSSE PICKED 4TH IN BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL; BONNEL & RIUS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford women's lacrosse team was selected fourth in the 2019 Big South Conference Preseason Poll while seniors Callie Bonnel and Adrian Rius were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Now in its fourth season of collegiate competition, Radford's lacrosse program is primed for its best year yet. The fourth-place ranking, which was voted on by the head coaches of each school in the Big South, is the highest ever preseason ranking for the Highlanders.

"I think it's great that each year we've been projected to finish higher and higher in the Big South," said head coach Haley Hardy. "With that being said I know that our team's goals reach far beyond the preseason projections and we are excited to be back together to work towards those aspirations."

Radford put together a 3-4 record in Big South play a season ago with wins over Longwood, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. The team reached the Big South Tournament quarterfinals for the second consecutive year as well, giving them plenty to build on.

A big part of that success was midfielder Callie Bonnel, who was named First Team All-Big South after setting a single-season school record for goals scored with 55. She also set a single-season Big South record with 25 free position goals and notched eight assists over the course of the year to bring her season point total to 63.

Attacker Adrian Rius also had a monster season in 2018, scoring a career-high 45 goals and adding a career-high five assists for 50 points. The Boca Raton, Fla. native ranked 23rd in the nation with 5.71 draw controls per game and finished with a program-record 97 on the year.

"Callie and Adrian are so strong in their respective positions, and I am thankful to the Big South Coaches for recognizing their hard work as athletes," continued Coach Hardy. "It's a big year for them now as seniors and I am confident that neither of them have hit their ceiling yet. We hope to be an exciting offense to watch with these two leading us."

The Highlanders kick off the 2019 season on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. when Saint Francis (Pa.) visits Cupp Stadium. Radford has six home games this season and admission is free.
