CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After recording his first game-winning goal in a Radford uniform, freshman defender/midfielder
Octavio Ocampo was named Big South Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Ocampo's goal against UNC Asheville, which was his third of the season, was scored in the 39th minute off a corner kick by
Pape Oumar Gueye. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native headed the in-swinging corner into the bottom right corner of the net, past Bulldog goalkeeper Jarrett Payne, to give Radford a 2-0 lead in what eventually became a 2-1 win for the Highlanders.
Ocampo played the full 90 minutes for Radford in the win against UNC Asheville, as the Highlanders limited the Bulldogs to five shots on target for their first road win and first conference win of the season. Ocampo was also part of a stout defense that limited Presbyterian to two shots on target in a 1-0 defeat earlier in the week.
Ocampo is the first Highlander men's soccer player to win Freshman of the Week honors. The weekly award is the first of his career.
Radford returns to action Wednesday night when it plays host to USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
