CHICAGO – Former Radford men's soccer player Nick Mayhugh has been named the 2019 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year with a Disability, the United States Soccer Federation announced on Monday.
 
"It's an incredible honor to receive this award and a privilege to wear the crest and represent the USA," Mayhugh said. "Thank you to Coach Sharp, the coaching staff, the medical staff and everybody on the technical side who contributed to the team's success throughout the year.
 
Mayhugh, who played for the Highlanders from 2015-18, been a fixture in the USPNT squad since 2017 and played a key role for the U.S. Paralympic 7-a-Side National Team that reached it highest-ever ranking in 2019 at No. 4. The midfielder netted 19 goals in 11 games for the Stars and Stripes, including a last-minute winner to down perennial powerhouse Iran. Mayhugh helped the USA secure its first-ever podium finish at the Para Pan-American Games, which included a comeback win over Brazil.

As a Highlander, Mayhugh made 10 starts and 28 appearances in addition to his international appearances with the USPNT. Mayhugh netted one goal for Radford – a game-winner against Winthrop in 2016 – along with a pair of assists in 2018 while playing over 700 minutes for the Highlanders, winning a pair of Big South Regular Season titles and a Big South Tournament title during his time in the New River Valley.
 
Votes for Player of the Year awards are collected from National Team coaches, National Team players who earned a cap in 2019, U.S. professional league head coaches, select media members as well as former players and administrators.
