RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, March 8th through Monday, March 11th.

  BASEBALL
 

vs. Harvard – Fri., March 8 @ 2 p.m. | Sat., March 9 @ Noon / 3 p.m. | Sun., March 10 @ 11 a.m.

  • Radford returns to action after going 1-2 at UAB last weekend. Third baseman Matt Roth belted a 2-run homer in the top of the 13th inning to help lift the Highlanders to an 8-7 victory over the Blazers, on Friday evening at Regions Field. The Highlanders lost both games of a doubleheader on Saturday.
  • Roth went hitless in his first six at-bats on Friday but drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left center field wall in the top of the 13th inning to plate shortstop Colby Higgerson (2-for-6, 2 runs), who also came through with a one-out triple on the previous at bat.  First baseman Spencer Horwitz (2-for-5, RBI) added a much-needed insurance run with a two-out single that drove in second baseman David Bryant (2-for-5, BB, 2 RBI's), who had singled and swiped second base.
  • RHP Austin Gerber rescued Higgerson (0.1 inn, 2 hits, 2 runs, HBP) in the bottom of the 13th to close the door on the Blazers and pick up the save. After walking his first batter to put runners on first and second, Gerber retired right fielder Zack Davis and catcher J. Paul Fullerton on fly balls to left field, ending the contest after nearly five hours of action.
  • Harvard split their opening four-game series with Wofford last weekend.
  • First baseman Patrick McColl hit .412 with two homers, two doubles and 5 RBI's in the series…Jake Suddleson hit .400 and drove in four runs.
  • Ian Miller (6.0 innings, 4 hits, 0 earned runs, 8K's) and Kevin Stone (6.0 innings, six hits, 1 earned run) were terrific in their season debuts.

  SOFTBALL

  • Radford puts its talents to the test in the War Eagle Challenge, which features a tough slate of games.
  • The Highlanders are coming off a 1-3 weekend but picked up a Sunday morning win against Austin Peay. Hannah Medlam hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning that put the Highlanders ahead, 4-3.
  • Medlam is hitting .348 with a team-high two triples. She has scored six runs and has a .500 slugging percentage.
  • Sydney Fisher leads the team with a .446 batting average and carries a 15-game hitting streak. She is the only Highlander with double-digit RBIs (11).
  • Jessie Marvin and Kayla Huffman have a combined 74 innings pitched with 51 strikeouts. Huffman leads the team with 28 strikeouts, while Marvin leads with a 2.58 ERA.
  • No. 20 Auburn ranks inside the top 30 nationally in numerous categories. Most notably they rank eighth in scoring with 7.3 runs per game.
  • Eight different players have scored 10+ times for the Tigers this season. Auburn is outscoring its opponents 146-37.
  • The Cardinals were picked to finish third in the Atlantic Division and fifth overall as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
  • Louisville is led at the plate by freshman Taylor Roby, who is hitting .379 (11-for-29).
  • Freshman Rebecca Chung leads the Cardinals with three home runs and has now reached base via a hit or a walk in 10 straight games.

  • Louisville brings an 11-6 overall record into the weekend following a 4-0 performance in its home-opening Cardinal Classic last weekend.
  • Senior Megan Hensley has driven in a team-high 12 RBIs and is currently on a seven-game hitting streak. Hensley also carries a team-best 2.08 ERA.
  • Mercer enters with a .500 record but have won seven of its last 10 games – including five in a row.
  • The Bears' Allie Jones has a team-best .397 batting average with 25 hits – five doubles and 13 RBIs.
  • Abby Walsh is responsible for driving in 17 of the teams 95 runs, which is the most on the team.
  • Pitching isn't the Bears strong suit as no pitcher on the team has lower than a 4.50 ERA.

  • The Tigers four losses have been at the hand of four different teams (Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, No. 16 Texas Tech and most recently No. 5 Washington).
  • Led by former Radford head coach, Mickey Dean, the Tigers have seven players batting over .300 with senior Casey McCrackin leading the charge. McCrackin is batting .458 with 27 hits, five doubles – all team-highs and five home runs.
  • Makayla Martin (8-2) leads the team with a 0.84 ERA and 62 strikeouts through 58.2 innings pitched.
  • No Tiger pitcher has above a 3.00 ERA.

 
  LACROSSE
 

vs. Mount St. Mary's – Saturday, March 9 @ Noon

  • The Highlanders are coming off a tough 23-8 defeat to No. 25 Virginia Tech in their last outing. Goalies Hannah Rosen, Maddie Bowman and Maddie Mashewske combined to make eight saves and as a team Radford pressured the Hokies into 10 turnovers.
  • Senior Juliette Ruland and junior Lindsey Carroll are tied for the team lead with eight goals through three games so far this season. Carroll also has three assists which is tied for the most on Radford alongside senior Emma Rogers.
  • Mount St. Mary's leads the all-time series, 1-0, following a 23-13 victory during the 2017 season. The two programs were scheduled to meet in 2018 as well, but the game was canceled due to inclement weather.
  • The Mount is 3-2 so far this season including a win over Big South-foe Presbyterian. They are averaging 12.0 goals on 27.2 shots per game with a 44.7 shooting percentage.
  • Sophomore attacker Jordan Butler leads the team with 12 goals on the year while junior attacker Kate Kinsella comes in just behind with 10 goals. While three different goalies have seen playing time, senior Jillian Petito leads the way with 34 saves across 270 minutes played. 

  WOMEN'S TENNIS
 

at Savannah State – Friday, March 8 @ 2 p.m. 
Where: Savannah, Ga. (Tiger Tennis Courts) 
Records: Radford (5-3) | Savannah State 
  • Radford will have a big conference match on Thursday before traveling to Savannah State for the Friday afternoon matchup.
  • The Highlanders are on a three game winning streak with wins against UNC Asheville, Hampton, and Mount St. Mary's. 
  • Winthrop has been a perennial power in the Big South, as Radford looks to knock them off for the first time in over a decade. 
  • Anastasia Belyaeva ad Malin Falk both bolstered their 2019 seasons with singles victories against Mount St. Mary's last Tuesday, pushing both of their records to 5-3. 
  • Drousile Dzeubou improved to 7-1 in singles play this year with a victory last week as well. The junior is tied for the most wins in the Big South this season.
  • Radford is tied with Charleston Southern atop the Big South standings so far, with both teams starting the year 2-0.
  • Winthrop will play UNC Asheville the Wednesday before playing Radford.

  MEN'S GOLF
 

Pinehurst Intercollegiate – Thurs., March 7 - Sun., March 10
Where: Pinehurst, N.C. (Pinehurst #8)

  • The Pinehurst Intercollegiate is an annual invitational championship of Division I collegiate teams.  Pinehurst Intercollegiate is a 20-year tradition at Pinehurst. The Intercollegiate is free and the public is welcome. (spectator carts are prohibited).
  • The Highlanders are the defending champions of the event.
  • Radford shot a combined score of 294 in the third round, en route to an eighth-place finish out of 19 teams at the two-day Wexford Plantation Invitational on February 26.
  • The Highlanders finished 17 strokes behind Charleston Southern, who captured the event with a score of 876.
  • Big South rivals Winthrop (885) and High Point (888) also finished just ahead of Radford in fourth and seventh-place respectively.  Radford finished ahead of Gardner-Webb (895) and Presbyterian (911).
  • Peter Gasperini tied for 10th place overall as he carded a combined total of 219 (78-70-71) and Ben Ramsey finished tied for 21stwith a total of 222 (74-74-74). Parker See (T-25, 75-73-75-223), Tyler Hull (T-51, 78-77-75-230) and Hunter Duncan (T-77, 86-78-74-238) rounded out the Highlanders' scoring.

 
  WOMEN'S GOLF
 

UNC Asheville French Broad Collegiate Invitational – Mon., March 11- Tues., March 12
Where: Asheville, N.C.

  • Radford defeated Appalachian State, 3.0-2.0, to take third-place at the Oyster Shuck Match Play event on February 26 at Patriot Point Golf Club.
  • Beatriz Mosquera Quintas and Sidney Walker were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Quintas defeated Joliana Elias at the No. 1 flight by a total of 3&2 and Walker bested Melany Chong by a 1UP count at the No. 2 flight.
  • Riko Nagai won the match for the Highlanders when she birdied her second extra hole, recording a Half-W against Morgan Adamchik at the No. 5 spot.
  • Radford defeated Wofford in the opening round. Freshman Beatriz Mosquera Quintas led the way for the No. 5 seeded Highlanders against No. 4 Wofford, picking up a 6&5 win against Emma King at the No. 2 flight.
  • At No. 4, Sidney Walker (Half-W) won with a birdie on the 19th-hole against Becca Earl and No. 5 Natalie Welsh recorded a 1UP triumph against Kristine Torralba.
  • No. 1 Riko Nagai halved against Grace Massengill and No. 3 Kasidy Beckel was defeated by Lina Settelmayer by a Half-W count.
