TRACK & FIELD PLACES FIFTH AT 2019 BIG SOUTH OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Three school records fell on the final day of the season as the Radford track & field team earned a fifth place finish at the 2019 Big South Outdoor Championships on Friday.

It was an amazing week for the Highlanders at Winthrop's Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex, but no day could quite compare to this one. With a monumental effort down the stretch, Radford finished with 71 points which is the most the team has accumulated at an outdoor championship since 2009.

Just like she was for the entire year, junior La'Tisha Chambers was the catalyst for it all, taking down two individual school records and helping break one relay record on the day. She kickstarted her day with a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.68 seconds to beat her previous record of 11.75 seconds earlier this season.

The Convington, Va. native then returned to the track to become the Big South champion in the 200-meter dash with a program record time of 23.75 seconds. Then teaming up with Karah Foster, Ryan Paine and Chancey Gunnell, the Highlanders crushed the school record with a time of 3:47.00 to take third.

In the first track event of the day, Radford earned a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay thanks to a 46.26-second performance by Kierra Henderson, Chancey Gunnell, Denisha Hoosier and La'Tisha Chambers. The time was the team's second-best of the season and ranks in the all-time top-10 as well.

Freshman Kayland Bond capped off a fantastic debut season with multiple strong results. She placed fourth in the 1,500 meters final with a personal record time of 4:39.00, the eighth-fastest in program history. The William Byrd High School product then followed it up with a time of 18:35.26 in the 5,000 meters despite it being her first time ever running it in collegiate competition.

Gunnell just missed getting herself another podium finish in the 400 meters final where she placed fourth and Tenae Washington picked up a pair of points in the 400 meter hurdles final soon after.

Mary Brown represented the throwers with a strong showing in the hammer throw, earning a PR of 45.12 meters (148'0") while battling some rain that passed through the area.

Giving Radford fans one final thing to cheer about on the day, Chambers was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second straight semester. She owns a 3.75 GPA as a Recreational Therapy major.
