RADFORD, Va. – Academics play a major role in how success is measured at Radford. Each and every member of the Highlander community works hard to see student-athletes progress in the classroom with college graduation being the ultimate goal.
On Saturday, May 11, 50 student-athletes saw that hard work come to fruition as they walked across the stage and received diplomas which represent the next step in their lives. The May 2019 Commencement exercises took place inside the Dedmon Center – a fitting location for the Radford Athletics family to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Due to their travel schedules, Radford University and President Brian O. Hemphill held a special graduation ceremony for the Baseball and Softball programs on Monday, May 6th.
"I am proud so of the work that our student-athletes put forth toward their academic and athletic achievements," said Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services Alix Guynn. "While this has been a historic year athletically, it has also been a remarkable year in the classroom!"
This group of young men and women excelled in the classroom as 83% of the senior class graduated with a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or higher. A total of 17 players earned Big South All-Academic Team selections in their careers while Alex Caldwell of Men's Tennis and Jessica Wollmann of Women's Soccer were each nominated for the prestigious Christenberry award.
The Christenberry Award is the highest academic honor awarded to Big South student-athletes. Wollmann was selected as a Christenberry Award winner and will be honored at the Big South Conference Hall of Fame Banquet in Hilton Head, SC.
