RADFORD, Va.—Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, Sept. 13th through Monday, Sept. 16th.


 
 MEN'S SOCCER

  • Radford owns a 1-2-1 record heading into Saturday's contest against NJIT. The Highlanders earned a 0-0 draw in their last match against the College of Charleston on Sunday.
  • Joseba Incera notched his first career shutout in Radford's most recent match against the College of Charleston. Incera had five saves against the Cougars and has 11 saves in two matches played.
  • Amadou Macky Diop was named Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week after netting a hat trick in Radford's 4-3 overtime win over UNC Greensboro.
  • Radford is playing its fourth home match of the season. The Highlanders are 1-2 at Cupp Stadium this year.
  • NJIT sports a 2-0-2 record, including a 1-1 draw in its last outing against Drexel. The Highlanders have scored 11 goals through their first four games, including seven in a win at Sacred Heart.
  • Rene White leads the NJIT attack with four goals in four games. White scored in each of NJIT's first three matches, including a pair of goals in their season-opening win over Sacred Heart.
  • As a team, NJIT's defense has allowed just three goals in four games. Goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys has started all four matches and has a 0.68 goals against average.
  • This is the first meeting between Radford and NJIT, which share the same nickname (Highlanders).

  • The Highlanders opened the 2019 season at home in with the 2019 Radford Invitational Tournament. The participating teams were Fordham, Norfolk, Rider, and Toledo.
  • Radford commenced the tourney in a thrilling five set bout against Toledo and split the final day against Fordham and Rider.
  • In the Big South as a team Radford rank—first in aces per set, blocks per set, team service aces, team total attacks, and team total blocks. Taylor O'Neal leads the conference in aces per set and service aces. Mackenzie Meehan is the leader in blocks per set and total blocks.
  • On a national scale the Highlanders rank—19th in aces per set, 71st in blocks per set, 76th in team attacks per set, 24th team service aces, and 74th team total blocks. O'Neal sits at 73rd in aces per set and 52nd in service aces, Jordan Coomes is 83rd for service aces, and Mackenzie Meehan ranks 86th in total blocks. 
  • Temple is out to a hot start winning all six of their matches thus far. 
  • The Owls have bested opponents in three sets in five of the six matches, taking the Bobcats of Ohio down in five. 
  • Junior defensive specialist/libero Averi Salvador picked up her first American Athletic Conference nod for her efforts in leading Temple to a 3-0 shutout over Ohio, Winthrop, and American. 
  • In the 2019 preseason poll, Columbia was picked to finish seventh overall in the Ivy League.
  • The Lions split opening day against Howard and St. John's, following a three-set victory against Canisius on the final day of the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic. For her performance during those matches, senior middle blocker Chichi Ikwuazom was named Ivy League Player of the Week. 
  • After opening the season in an 0-3 hole, Lehigh is currently riding a five-game winning streak after sweeping their opponents at the Crosstown Invitational and single game versus New Jersey Institute of Technology.
  • Seniors Ana Spangenberg and Lauren Bright along with junior Sabrina Lancaster were selected by Head Coach Alexa Keckler as tri-captains ahead of the 2019 campaign. 

 
 MEN'S GOLF


VCU Invitational 
Monday, Sept. 16 – Tuesday, Sept. 17 
Where: Richmond, Va. 
  • The Highlanders begin the 2019 season with an in-state tournament hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University. 
  • Redshirt senior Peter Gasperini returns to Radford seeking to build off of his 2017-18 season where he posted a 74.04 stroke average which was good for second best on the team at the time. At the Pinehurst Intercollegiate during March, he recorded his best finish and 79-2 record. 

 WOMEN'S TENNIS


Elon Invite

  • The Highlanders will commence the 2019 fall season under Head Coach Jessica Giuggioli, who enters her third year at the helm. 
  • Back in July the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recognized Radford for earning ITA All-Academic Team honors for the fifth time in program history and the third consecutive year.

  • The Highlanders are riding a three-game win streak after downing East Carolina, VMI, and Wofford to begin the month of September.
  • The Big South Player of the Week awards were announced on Tuesday afternoon and both Nelia Perez and Alexeis Kirnos were among those recognized by the conference office for their performances against Elon and East Carolina.
  • Radford leads the Big South in shutouts at four and are first in the standings due to their tremendous 5-1 record, being unbeaten on the road.
  • The Highlanders have beaten two SoCon opponents so far this season VMI and Wofford, while outscoring opponents 10-3 on the young season.
  • ETSU recorded their highest offensive production of the season in their last game, taking down the Delaware State 5-2 in the second game of their weekend road trip.
  • Freshman Anjela Kricak (Krusevac, Serbia) introduced herself to the Bucs history book, grabbing her first two goals and an assist in blue and gold against the Hornets.
  • Western Carolina had its two-game winning streak halted with a 5-0 loss at Charlotte on Sunday. The 49ers shutout of the Catamounts was the first of the season for WCU. 
  • Western Carolina registered its shutout, the first of the season, with a 1-0 victory at Davidson on Thursday, Sept. 5. Senior Julia Winter scored the game-winning goal while freshman Melody Mezzina earned her first start in goal and picked up the shutout.
