RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team spent the morning in their community to celebrate and participate in the national Women's Basketball Coaches Association Day of Service initiative. The Highlanders visited local elementary, Belle Heth, to spend time with the students.
The morning started off with the team greeting the students as they arrived at the front entrance of the school as well as the cafeteria. The Highlanders made it a point to extend a warm welcome to the students and personally introduce themselves.
Radford also ran several fundamental stations during two P.E. classes in addition to reading to various classes throughout the school.
"I am so impressed with the joy and passion the Radford University Women's Basketball team showed to our students and staff today", said principal Tara Grant. "The Highlanders greeted our students, promoted the importance of education of our morning announcements, ran stations in P.E., and read in classrooms. Coach McGuire has done an amazing job developing the team mentality and it is obvious they enjoy each other. We are excited to support them at their games." Tara's connection to Radford extends past being a student here but also wife to men's golf coach Mike Grant.
The WBCA Day of Service encourages as many basketball programs as possible to participate in community service. Last year more than 250 programs committed to performing service projects and posting about it on social media on one dedicated date.
"Today is an important day for the women's basketball community throughout the country," said head coach Mike McGuire. "We participated in the WBCA Day of Service by spending time with Belle Heth Elementary School. We all had an amazing time with their staff and students. Tara Grant has done an amazing job leading Belle Heth and teaching their students important habits that will become important life skills. You can feel the positive energy as you are walking around Belle Heth. I want to thank our team and staff for giving back with a selfless attitude. This team has a great spirit about them and made this morning a lot of fun."
