Highlanders Held Off by Pesky Pirates Defense

HAMPTON, Va. – Makaila Wilson had a season-high 19 points Tuesday evening, but Hampton defeated Radford in Big South action, 66-51, at the HU Convocation Center.

Kyanna Morgan had a season-best 14 points and eight rebounds for the Highlanders in the loss. Bryonna McClean tied Morgan for the team lead with eight rebounds, while Rachel LaLonde had four assists for Radford. The Highlanders struggled all night against Hampton's defense, which forced a season-high 25 Radford turnovers.

Hampton got off to a hot start on its home court, opening the game on an 11-1 run in the first six minutes. The Pirates limited Radford to just one made basket, a driving layup by Danielle Montelbano inside the last two minutes of the quarter, as Radford trailed 19-7 after the opening 10 minutes.

The home side kept up its intensity in the second quarter, but Radford started to claw its way back into the game. The Highlanders went on an 8-0 run over a 1:35 span midway through the quarter to cut a 19-point deficit down to 29-18, with Wilson and Morgan combining for six of the eight points. Hampton, however, closed out the half by scoring the final two baskets and took a 35-21 lead into the locker room.

Similar to the way the first half started, Hampton scored the first six points before back-to-back layups by Wilson and Morgan ended the run, with the latter coming on a nifty fastbreak play started by a LaLonde steal that included Montelbano going behind the back to avoid defenders. Morgan scored six points in the quarter to reach double-figures for the second time this season but Hampton extended its lead to 47-29 after three quarters.

Radford put the pressure on Hampton in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates continued to find ways to score, pushing their lead to 60-37 midway through the final frame. From there, Radford put together a spirited scoring run to cut the deficit in half. Makaila Wilson hit a trio of 3-pointers as the Highlanders went on an 11-0 run in a 100-second span to cut what was a 23-point deficit down to 12, 60-48. Hampton ultimately scored the next two baskets and kept Radford to three points in the final three minutes to preserve a 66-51 win.

Nylah Young led all scorers with 15 points for Hampton, while Victoria Davis and Tia Montagne had nine apiece for the Pirates. Montagne also had eight rebounds, while Davis added seven assists.

QUOTABLE
"They do a really good job of trying to pin you to a side. We got really bogged down on offense. We had many possessions where we were reversing the ball and finding each other, and we panicked. Panic led to some one-on-one and some bad shots and a lot of costly turnovers. We had 25 turnovers and they had 26 points off of them. We have to learn to fight through [situations] when things aren't easy, and tonight we weren't willing to do that. And when you're not willing to do that, it makes for a long night."
-Head coach Mike McGuire on the game
