Highlanders Fall in Exciting Home Opener

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program fell in an exciting match Sunday afternoon 64-68 to Marshall. Radford out-shot Marshall by 11% and saw ten different players on the score sheet but the team was hurt by turnovers throughout the game.

The Highlanders rebounded the ball much better Sunday with the margin at just 33-32 in their opponent's favor. Radford also shot the ball much better from beyond the arch compared to their opponent at 50% with Marshall shooting just 22%. The lead changed six times and the game was tied twice in a back-and-forth affair that saw 29 combined points off the fast break from both teams. Radford most struggled in the turnover battle however as Marshall capitalized with 28 points off Radford's 24 turnovers.

Similar to their game against Pittsburgh, Radford would jump out to a lead early in the first quarter. Ashley Tudor picked up right where she left off in the previous game with two made free throws while Kyanna Morgan's layup made it a 4-2 lead. Marshall and Radford would trade buckets throughout the first quarter, but it was Marshall who ultimately pulled away with a 21-14 lead at the end of the first.

The Highlanders' offensive attack did not let up in the second quarter and shot 50% with seven made field goals. Taiye Johnson left her mark with two made shots including one just shy of the three-point arch. Morgan also added five points including her fourth three-pointer of the young season. Morgan also scored the final points of the half as the buzzer went off to make it just a five-point deficit.

Coming out of the half Radford took control of the game in impressive fashion. The third quarter was their best shooting quarter of the game with the team shooting 60%. Tudor gave Radford the lead just three minutes into the second half with a fast break layup. Marshall responded to take back the lead with a three-pointer, but Bridget Birkhead responded with a three ball of her own to put Radford back out in front.

Bryonna McClean got the energetic home crowd going with a steal and fast break layup with 2:36 left in the third quarter extending the Highlander lead to 49-44. Another made free throw by Tudor gave Radford its biggest lead of the night at 52-46. With the score at 52-48 headed into the fourth quarter the game was set up for an exciting finish.

Destinee Marshall started the fourth quarter strong for Radford with her second three-pointer of the day to make it a 55-50 lead. Marshall would use an 8-0 run however to snatch back the lead with under five minutes remaining. With under a minute remaining Radford forced Marshall to the free throw line and their opponent went 6-8 from the charity stripe to put the game away.

QUOTABLE
"In most ways it was the type of game we expected coming in. Really proud of our third quarter and how we came out of the locker room with great intensity and that is something we can build on. It was a tough loss, but I think we are in a growing pain stage right now and we have to learn how to do things well on a day to day basis to where it transfers over to a game." -Head Coach Mike McGuire
