Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Close Game Slips Away Late in Highlanders’ Big South Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program fell in a close game at UNC Asheville Wednesday night 60-69. Radford fought back from as much as a 11-point deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter until some clutch shooting sealed the final score in the Bulldog's favor.

Radford needed to start Wednesday night's game strong and did just that. The Highlanders finished the first quarter hitting eight of their last nine shots. Destinee Marshall got her career night off to a hot start with a team-best 10 points. Marshall bumped her point total up with a pair of three-pointers. Radford would finish the first quarter with a 23-14 lead.

While Radford started the second quarter like the first, the final six minutes were plagued by a 13-0 run by UNC Asheville that allowed for the lead to slip away. Three Highlanders in Taiye Johnson, Danielle Montelbano and Rachel LaLonde all provided baskets in the first four minutes, but the scoreless drought allowed the Bulldogs to take a 35-31 lead into halftime.

The Highlanders regrouped in the second half and LaLonde was the response for the Highlanders to break the drought with a three-pointer. Five minutes into the third Marshall added yet another three-pointer to pull Radford back from their largest deficit of the night and make it a 40-48 game. Radford finished the quarter on a high note with an 8-3 run thanks to smooth plays by Kyanna Morgan and Marshall.

With a 48-54 deficit, the Highlanders locked in for an exciting final quarter. Morgan highlighted her excellent second half with back-to-back three-pointers that tied the game at 54-all with eight minutes to play. Asheville retook the lead on the next play, but LaLonde tied the game back up with a nice spin move. UNC Asheville used clutch shooting to go on an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach however, sealing the final score 60-69 in the opponent's favor.

On the night, Marshall was the Highlanders' top point scorer as she was back on the court after missing the last couple of games. Morgan and LaLonde also finished with double-digit point totals while LaLonde, Jackie Christ and McClean all collected five or more rebounds.
