 BASEBALL


at Winthrop - Friday, Apr. 16, 6 p.m. | Saturday, Apr. 17, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. (DH)

  • Coming off of a weekend of postponed games, the Highlanders look ahead to their three upcoming conference games against Winthrop.
  • Sean Cheely is leading the team with a batting average of .305 and the Highlanders will look to him to keep his hot hitting going.
  • Last time out Cheely recorded two hits, one run, and five RBIs with five at bats against Gardner-Webb.
  • With a 4.28 ERA, Greg Duncan has tossed a season-high 28.2 innings against Big South competition. He has 19 strikeouts in conference – second on the team, behind Ryan Bywaters' 25.
  • Winthrop's Ty Hooks leads the team with a .429 batting average and is tied for tops on the team with 24 hits and 13 RBIs.
  • Since winning their first two Big South series', the Eagles have dropped their previous two series' and have lost six of their last seven.

 
 SOFTBALL

  • Facing a rough stretch, the Highlanders will try to come out of a slump with a three-game series against Longwood.
  • Radford's Sydney Fisher, Madison Canady and Destiny Freeman are all hitting at over .300 with Fisher's .376 leading the way.
  • Pitcher Skyler DeHart leads the team with 3.25 ERA and has a 2.92 ERA in Big South games. The sophomore has tallied three complete games in conference and has nine strikeouts.
  • Longwood enters the series 17-19 overall. Since going on an 11-game win streak in March, the Lancers have dropped six of their last eight games.
  • Longwood's Sydney Backstrom has a 3.05 ERA and leads the team with 112 season strikeouts.
  • Nia Green and Sydney Jacobsen's above .250 batting average has been a main contributor to the Lancers offense. Green leads the team with a .292 average and Jacobsen has a team-best 16 extra base hits.

  • The Highlanders are coming off a huge 3-0 win against Winthrop last week that clinched a No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament.
  • Last time out Gabi Paupst, Kateri Schoettinger and Katelyn O'Donnell all notched goals leading the Highlanders to victory.
  • Katelyn O'Donnell led the team with a career-high four shots on goal and even notched her first career goal scored as a Highlander.
  • Campbell is coming into the match with a 6-3-1 record and coming off a 1-0 win this past week over Charleston Southern.
  • The Highlanders and Fighting Camels have met the past four Big South Tournaments – including a pair of semifinal meetings most recently in 2018 and 2019.
  • Radford downed Campbell 2-0 in 2018 and scored three unanswered for a 3-2 victory in 2019. Each of those victories helped carry the Highlanders to back-to-back Big South Championship titles.

  • Radford's win streak is now at a program-best four straight after taking down Winthrop and Longwood in two conference matches last week. Radford's win against Winthrop was their first against the Eagles in program history, and they will look to pick up another round of firsts against Campbell and High Point this week.
  • Wednesday's match against Campbell is scheduled as a non-conference match and will not impact the conference standings.
  • Lindsey Carroll had the deciding goal in Radford's 10-9 win over Winthrop coming off a free position shot with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock. She recorded four goals and an assist over the two games.
  • Rachel Rogers forced five turnovers across the two matches including four against Longwood which was tied for a team high. She also picked up six ground balls against Longwood, another team high.
  • Margaret Gleason scored a goal with 15 minutes remaining in the second half against Winthrop that gave Radford a 9-6 lead and assisted two of the Highlanders' goals in the game as well. She replicated that performance with another goal and two assists against Longwood.
  • Since the two teams last met on March 13th, Campbell has split their matches winning three and losing three. Most notably the Camels lost at William & Mary, who Radford would later go on to beat on the road.
  • High Point is currently on a three game winning streak beating Coastal Carolina, Campbell, and Winthrop with ease. All three are common opponents with Radford.

 
 MEN'S TENNIS

  • The Big South tournament is finally here and the Highlanders will look to defend their 2019 title as the #2 seed in the tournament against the #3 seed Gardner-Webb.
  • Radford posted two strong wins last week in a 4-3 close win against Charlotte and a dominant 5-2 win over Davidson.
  • Aditya Balsekar posted another perfect 2-0 record in singles play this week, extending his singles win streak to 13. Balsekar's 14 total victories are the most out of all players in the Big South, and his 13-2 record on court six is better than anybody else in the conference.
  • Another freshman Guilherme Severin also had a big hand in both Highlanders' wins this week. On court three singles against Charlotte, he was the clinching court 6-2, 6(4)-7, 6-3 after being forced indoors halfway through his singles match due to rain. Against Davidson he clinched the doubles point on court one 6-4 and then went on to win his singles match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to give Radford their fifth point.
  • Yevhen Sirous picked up a huge singles court against Charlotte in a 4-3 win on the top-flight for Radford. His 6-1, 7-6(1) victory came against the 90th ranked ITA singles player which was crucial in grabbing four singles courts for the win.
  • Should the Highlanders advance in the tournament, the Championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. the next day against the winner of #1 seed UNC Asheville and #4 seed Presbyterian.

 
 WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • The Big South tournament is finally here and the Highlanders will look to build upon their 2019 runner-up finish as the #3 seed in the tournament against the #2 seed Presbyterian.
  • Last week Radford played three tough matches against Liberty, Gardner-Webb, and George Washington. The big win of the week came against Gardner-Webb 5-2 in a match that was close up until the final two courts that Radford would end up taking.
  • Salma Loudili had another dominant week in doubles play going 2-0 on the top-flight. In doubles she won 6-2 at Liberty and then came home to beat George Washington 6-3. In singles play Loudili picked up another huge win on court one in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in a close match.
  • Camryn McClure has also won two straight on court six for Radford, posting a 4-4 record on court six this season.
  • Earlier this season Presbyterian and Radford met up in a 2-5 loss for Radford in a match that could've easily gone either way.
  • Should the Highlanders advance in the tournament, the Championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. the next day against the winner of #1 seed Charleston Southern and a to be determined #4 seed.

   
 MEN'S GOLF
 

at Wofford Intercollegiate - Monday, April 12th - Tuesday, April 13th

  • Radford moves onto its fifth tournament of the season at the Wofford Intercollegiate, the fifth of six tournaments for the Highlanders this season and the final tune-up before the Big South Championships.
  • Tyler Hull (71-72-68, -5) was the top performing Highlander at the Golfweek Invitational, finishing tied for 7th out of all competitors
  • Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Bryce Corbett (75-70-67, -4) also performed well for Radford, finishing second on the team and tied for 10th amongst all competitors.
 
 WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Radford moves onto its final and most important tournament of the season at the Big South Championships, the sixth of six tournaments for the Highlanders this season.
  • Sidney Walker (72-75-74, +8) was the top performing Highlander once again at the Golfweek Invitational, finishing sixth out of all competitors.
  • Natalie Welsh (77-75-76, +15) and Riko Nagai (77-78-76, +18) also performed well for Radford finishing just outside of the top-ten for all competitors, finishing tied for 11th and tied for 13th, respectively.

 
 WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
 

at JMU Invitational - Saturday, April 17th

  • Radford is back in action for its fourth competition this week, this time at the JMU Invitational hosted by James Madison.
  • A couple weeks ago the Highlanders battled brutally cold weather to notch some good performances at the Vertklasse Meet.
  • Rachel Werking placed third overall in the 1500m with a time of 4:43.06 which is fifth fastest in program history. Rachel Millirons and Chloe Wellings also entered the record book for the1500m at seventh and ninth, respectively.
  • Felicia Hewitt placed herself eighth in the record books for the 200m with a time of 25.52.
